Well, its a motor-powered winch designed to provide maximum torque on demand.

Finding the best winch in today's market is not that easy. It calls for extensive research. But the idea of having to spend many days on doing research doesn’t go well with most people. Sitting glued to a computer screen for hours on end to come up with the best decision for your purchase, is something most of you will try to avoid at all costs. There is a saying that life is nothing ever going to hand you things on a silver platter. This is true to some extent, but I beg to differ. Why? Its because I have got you covered with this review. I did some digging on the web to find the best winch that will match my ATV hiking needs and other outdoor tasks. I came up with a long list of models. However, the Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark 9.5, 12 VDC winch, 9,500 lb/4,309 kg capacity with roller fairlead beat all the top contenders hands down. I decided to indulge myself further into researching this winch. I've learned as much as there is to learn about it. I've gone to the extent where I kind of feel like a pro in the field now. 😛

Are you ready for my in depth review of the Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark 9.5 winch? Without further ado, let me show you the top-notch features that will give you some good bang for your buck.

Powerful, Weatherproof Motor

jeep-wrangler-rubicon
A winch would look totally awesome on this.

A good winch needs to be able to take a beating and withstand all the harsh outdoor elements. Superwinch's Tiger Shark 1595200 doesn’t disappoint. It comes with a perfectly sealed 12-volt DC motor that enables it to operate in extreme weather conditions. This motor can withstand rain, snow and dust. Furthermore, it provides you with brute force to match. The motor produces a whopping 5.2 HP. This generates enough torque to pull 9,500 pounds of weight. To paint you a clearer picture, that is the same as pulling up a mature hippo off its feet.

Heavy Duty Handheld Remote Control

No one wants to be anywhere near bulky objects that may accidentally smash you like a melon without a warning. This winch lets you operate it at a safe distance of up to 12 feet. Well, I’m already starting to feel like a high-tech specialist controlling massive objects with a simple remote control. Not only does it give you full control over the pulling process, but it also comes in a user friendly design that gives you a field day operating it. Ooh, my hands are itchy - I can’t wait to give it a try!

Ergonomic Free Spool Lever

Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark is not your average winch. I can best describe it as a winch on steroids. Its free spool lever mechanism is nothing short of state of the art, both in design and functionality. The lever is ergonomically shaped to provide better grip during lifting and pulling. It gives you peace of mind knowing that the object is well secured. With it, you have the confidence to execute vigorous, off-road maneuvers without activating the winch.

Portable

This winch is quite lightweight for the exceptional torque that it generates. It has an overall dimension of 20.8 x 9.2 x 6.3 inches and weighs in at 90 pounds. The fact that it uses DC current makes it a more flexible choice. It can be used in remote areas that don't have a power supply.

Every product comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark 9.5 is no exception. Below, I’m going to outline its pros and cons to enable you decide whether it is a perfect match for your needs.

Pros

  • Great power to size ratio
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Durable and can operate in any weather condition
  • Effortless and safe remote-controlled operation
  • Better and secure grip
  • Affordable
  • Smooth and quiet operation

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a mounting plate

Customer reviews and scores

jeep-2
Spice it up with a winch and it's twice as awesome.

What better way to find out the truth regarding this winch than by looking at the customer reviews and scores given to it? I know of many websites that provide great Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark 9.5 reviews. But I mostly look to my number one favorite source for reviews: Amazon. At the time of writing, this winch has many customer reviews. And from all those reviews, it gets a very impressive rating. This is quite impressive and way above the rating of many other entry level models on the market.

So what is it that customers like most about this product? Well, from my findings most customers are very pleased with its design and sheer power. They say that it renders their pulling and lifting tasks much easier. It packs a great punch in its small design making it an ideal winch for those who are constantly on the go. Customers say that the price of the winch is within the range of the average consumer. I tend to agree. It provides more for less and does it beyond expectations.

Customer Questions And Answers

Before winding up my review of this excellent winch, let me first outline the questions and answers posted by customers regarding this product. There are many but lets look at some of the most notable.

Q: Can it winch a 4,000 pounds trailer up a slope?

A: It can handle up to 9,000 pounds with ease. Do the math!

Q: Does the winch have a power inlet and outlet?

A: Yes, it does.

Q: Can I detach the roller fairlead to mount in front of a winch bumper?

A: Yes, you can.

Conclusion

After weighing the pros and cons of Superwinch 1595200 Tiger Shark 9.5, I can say that it is a good purchase for the price. It packs enough power and comes in a compact design that makes it portable. The winch provides the convenience of effortless switching and can safely operate in any kind of weather. It receives many positive reviews owing to its ergonomic design and sheer ease of use.  It's not the lowest priced one out there. But when you look at the price/performance ration, you're actually still getting one of the best, cheap winches for the money. I highly recommend the Tiger Shark for anyone looking for an ideal entry level winch that will ease the task of lifting and pulling heavy machinery.

The Smittybilt 97495 XRC Winch - 9500 lb. Load Capacity is advertised as the ideal recovery aid with the "muscle and reliability to bail you out of any situation". This is where I get PTSD style flashbacks to a trip I took three years ago and wish me and my buddies had had a winch this strong. So, the five of us decided to head out into the forest for a full week of camping and exploring with the general aim of getting back to nature. This did not mean falling face first into the mud trying to haul the jeep out of a wet, slimy ditch. I'm sure that this would have been the best recovery winch for camping because not only does it seem to be strong and reliable, it has other great features to appeal to idiots, I mean novices like us.

The Smittybilt 97495 Recovery Winch Specifications For Strong, Reliable Performance

Now if you are like me, you will read the big long list of words and numbers in the specs for this product and not take a whole lot in. I'm not technically minded that way. I just want to be able to attach the winch to car, attach the other end of the winch to the thing I want to pull, set it in motion and fix the problem. What I can tell, however, is the different components and numbers certainly don't count for nothing. There are many positive reports for this system, so it all has its purpose.

jeep-1
Plowing through thick snow without a winch? What's this guy thinking?

This specification includes the tough wire rope cable, the 161.28:1 gear ratio, a series wound 6.6 HP motor and that all-important 3-Stage Planetary Gear System. This is a high quality, powerful piece of kit that is designed for optimised pulling power and efficiency. There are many happy users talking about its strength when pulling large vehicles out of difficult situations (here comes that flashback again) and the speed of the operation due to the clever gear mechanisms. This Smittybilt winch has a 9500lb load capacity - that's 4,309 kilograms for all my European friends - so it should be up to most tasks.

Despite initial impressions, I soon noticed that this Smittybilt 9500lb load recovery aid was built for a wider audience - including novices like myself.

While some people will look at all these clever specs and numbers and see the subtle differences in power, strength and ability compared to other models, I couldn't help but notice some of the smaller, lesser features. They may just be bonuses to some buyers that are using this for more practical, professional purposes, but they stand out to inexperienced users too. The first is the inclusion of a corded remote. I can just imagine the five of us standing around this powerful winch and pulling straws to see who starts it up and traps a finger, so this remote would help a lot. I have noticed that some users are complaining about the build quality of this remote control and its connections, which leads to the usual complaints about this being made in China (not the good-old US of A). Personally, I'm not too worried about a few cheaper parts if the product works well and the rest of the device seems to be of high quality.

The other frequently mentioned comment in user reviews that makes me keen to try this Smittybilt 97495 winch is that it is "idiot proof". The specifications and the power of the device made me a little cautious about recommending this to my friends, but this comment helps a lot. Many users say that the system is easily mounted onto their jeeps and it doesn't take too much skill or effort to get it all working. There is the added benefit here that the unit has recently been redesigned so that it can be mounted in three separate positions. This surely increases the product's versatility.

Finally, this 97495 XRC winch is strong, durable and resilient enough to deal with any situation and long term use.

suv-1
Strap a winch on there and be the envy of your friends.

With all this talk of Chinese parts and user friendly designs, you may be worrying about the strength and durability of this winch. Thankfully, the creators appear to have gone to great lengths to ensure that this product is tough enough to put up with heavy use and rough handling in most conditions. Many users say that the basic system and mechanisms seem to be holding up well and they are happy to rely on the product for a long time to come. The idea of a UV-resistant coating means little to me, but I can appreciate the benefits of the stainless steel hardware and the waterproofing.

This winch has an IP67 rating and an amphibious motor and should be able to withstand heavy rain and wet conditions. This may not sound like a big deal to all buyers but it might shut one of my friends up. Every time we camp out near the shore of the river - a tidal river I must add - he always says the same thing: "what if we misjudge the tide and the jeep gets stuck out here - or worse". Well, this tough, waterproof system ought to shut him up once and for all.

The pros and cons of this Smittybilt 97495 XRC Winch.

Pros

  • Strong enough to handle heavy loads
  • Fast action for efficient recoveries
  • Waterproof and durable for greater reliability
  • Idiot-proof design that includes a remote control

Cons

  • Some concerns over parts made in China
  • Sounds a lot more technical than it actually is which can put some newbies off

The Smittybilt 97495 Recovery Aid Final Verdict

I would be the first person to admit that I know nothing about the finer details of a winch and the best mechanisms to look for. What I do know, however, is that the Smittybilt 97495 XRC Winch - 9500 lb. Load Capacity has a lot of other benefits behind the main specification that appeal to novices like me. It is designed to be easy to install and use, it has a great mechanism with a remote control to make the process more effortless and it seems to be tough enough for most needs. This is a cheap winch when you look at the brute force that you will get. This here is the very definition of bang for your buck. Personally, I think that this would be the best recovery winch for our friend's jeep and a must have for our next major expedition - now I just have to convince him to go and buy one!

3. Superwinch 1145220 Terra 45 ATV & Utility Winch - 4500 Lbs / 2046 Kg Load Capacity

Superwinch 1145220 Terra 45 ATV & Utility Winch (4500lbs/2046kg Rating)
  • Sealed solenoid with circuit breaker
  • Fit type: Vehicle Specific
  • 55' of 1/4" steel wire rope with ergonomic cam...
  • High-efficiency, low amp draw, sealed 1.6 hp...

I always imagine myself racing up a muddy terrain with my 4x4. Things are doing great! I am as invigorated as my car is muddy. Life isn't getting any better than this. Then, in a split of a second, my into a pool of heartless, stinking mud! What am I going to do? Thankfully, one of my fellow outdoor adventurers is equipped with the Superwinch 1145220 Terra 45 winch. And he's going to drag my ATV out of this ungodly mess that I've managed to get myself into. In only a few minutes, I'll be out of my embarassing predicament, happily off-roading the living daylights out of all these muddy trails again.

Ever since I was a boy, I've always tried to make my stuff better. Be it my bicycle, car, truck, or ATV. I was always compelled to somehow transform it to make it better, faster, more rugged and durable than the British Monarchy. In so doing, I had to put my creations to the test to establish their limitations, and then push beyond them. Since I designed most of my toys for off-road usage, it usually meant driving them until they couldn't go any further. Or in simple words, until they got stuck!

Must Have In Every Situation

Having done this many times in all types of situations, I became very familiar with the benefits of having a winch. A winch is probably a must have accessory on your utility vehicle, since it can take you to some very extreme places. Many would prioritize equipment like tires, lift kits, lockers and other truck parts. And while these accessories have their importance, what differentiates a safe and a disastrous off-road expedition from a not so safe off-road expedition, is whether or not your vehicle is equipped with an all-round winch like the Superwinch Terra 45.

Money And Time Well Spent

quad-bikes-1
This winch would work well for any of these.

Having an effective bumper winch on my truck can save you much money, time and frustration. When your ATV is spinning its feels and getting nowhere fast, you're going to need a little bit of help. Whenever I need it, I'll be patting myself on the back for being smart enough to have bought it. Of course, I can find a cheaper one than the Terra 45 Utility winch, but I might not find one that's more cost-effective. The Superwinch 1145220 Terra 45 ATV & Utility Winch (4500Ibs/2046kg Rating) one of the best winches for the money that I have been able to find online.

The "Terra 45" makes it clear that his is a 4500 pounder. So this isn't exactly the strongest winch in the list. I have others on this very same page with no less than 9500 pound pulling power. But if your specific all terrain vehicle just so happens to be lighter than 4500, then there is no reason to shell out more cash for a more powerful winch. If this one suffices, this one suffices. You know what I mean?

The majority of the reviews I've seen for the Terra 45 winch have been overwhelmingly in praise. Only a very small number of people weren't happy with it. If you're looking for a winch that will do what it's meant to do, every single time, then the Terra 45 winch is just what you're looking for!

Features

  • Has a powerful, 1.5 horsepower motor and yet it's still light enough to carry around
  • It draws low amount of current which is perfect for heavy winching scenarios
  • The motor, circuit breaker and solenoid contact are weather sealed for increased durability
  • 55 inches of 1/4 inch thick steel wire rope which is strong enough for heavy winching activities.
  • Has large steel bearings which uses machined-in, oil pocket bronze bearings

Enough Power For Every Job

quad-bikes-4
You gonna pull this up a rock with a rope?

Being a driver who likes going off-road every now and then, I am sure to check out the Superwinch 1145220 Terra 45 winch. This bumper winch has what I need to get out of any tough spot, 1.5 horse power and 4500 pound pull rating. With that said, it's capable of pulling my typical truck, sport utility vehicle, hummer or jeep out of about any situation I can put it into. It is meant to be used by trail riding, mother-nature loving off-road afficionados like you and me, who enjoy risking driving through the tough spots for that extra little thrill.

This winch will be your angel sent from heaven when you hit one of those difficult spots where you just can't get the required traction from those big tires to hoist yourself out of a mess. The Terra 45 winch has more than enough power to do the job.

Easy To Mount

The unit comes fully assembled with electrical pigtails that simplify electrical wiring. The unit features robust design that virtually eliminates any possibility of deflection. The unit is also light enough for easy transportation and installation on my ATV. The unit was also very properly packaged. Superwinch obviously wants to ensure that the unit arrives safely on your doorstep. No need to be worried about damaged box or jumbled contents.

Safe And Sound

In an effort to achieve maximum safety and winching ability, the unit features a heavy duty latched hook and a steel wire rope. Again, very little noise is produced while the rope is spooling on the drum. And while I enjoy the loud rumbling of my ATV's engine, when it comes to winches... I am the kind of a person who associates silent operation with quality. What about you?

Reliability

The most reliable winch is the one which can perform well even in extremely wet conditions. When the winch is used under muddy/rainy conditions, chances are that the unit will become extremely wet. A cheap, shoddy winch will lose a significant portion of its performance. Rest assured that the Terra 45 Winch is a high quality unit. This unit can work effectively even when completely submerged in mud.

Speed And Efficiency

A suitable winch should be able to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy very fast. The Terra 45 winch is capable of squeezing out a lot of performance on a limited amount of supplied electrical energy. Its speed is also impressive. And so is the battery life. Again, its robust design ensures that it produces low temperatures when operating at full load. All in all, it's a really great winch for the money. This one will pull any ATV under 4500 pounds out of the mud for sure.

My Verdict

One of the best things about this unit, is that it is pretty much ready to function right out of the box. The remote control is also something that I like in terms of feel and function. This unit will also never be a let-down down in matters of speed and efficiency. With that said, very little amount of rope remains uncoiled when forward momentum ceases. When it comes to power output to weight ration, the Terra 45 is a great deal of winch for the dollar. I'm telling you... if you are the proud owner of a <4500 lbs ATV, invest in this cheap, yet excellent winch. You'll be happy you did on your next off-road adventure.

How To Use A Winch

Winch FAQ

In case the above reviews haven't answered all your questions yet... welcome to the FAQ section!

1. What Does A Recovery Winch Do And What Is It Used For?

A winch is a pulling device which is often used for listing things that are too heavy to lift by hand. Most of the time when people talk about winches, they mean winches for all terrain vehicles. These sometimes get stuck in mud pools that turned out to be deeper than they looked. But winches may also be used for trailers, boats and even in wakeboarding.

If you would like to learn more, please have a look at winches on How Stuff Works.

2. What Is The Difference Between A Winch And A Hoist?

A hoist is for listing. A winch is for pulling. A hoist lifts things straight up. A winch pulls a heavy object across a level surface.

3. What Is A Hand / Hydraulic / Electric Winch?

A hand winch is operated by hand. A hydraulic winch is an automated unit that works using fluid pressure. An electric winch is an automated unit that is powered by electricity from a battery.

4. What is the best electric winch for an ATV?

The ones reviewed on this page are all electric and meant to be used for all terrain vehicles. Pick whichever one is strong enough to pull your vehicle.

5. What Is The Best Cheap Winch?

All the ones reviewed on this page have outstanding price/performance ratios. Not all of them are equally powerful. Due to the differences in load capacities and their varying prices, the dollar per pound ratio varies from one unit to the next. Their prices are also always changing, so you'll have to do the math yourself.

You need a winch that is able to pull your specific vehicle's weight. I contend that a $200 winch that's not strong enough and therefore useless, is more expensive than a $300 that is strong enough and therefore useful. So which winch gives you the best bang for your buck, is going to depend on your personal situation.

6. What Is A Fairlead On A Winch?

A fairleed is a small ring or mechanism, whose function is guiding a rope that runs through it. The aim is to avoid chafing the rope. If your winch doesn't have a fairleed, the rope you are using will wear and tear more quickly than if you had been using one. Rope has the tendency to chafe quite a bit when it is pulling at an angle. The more often you pull your ATV at an angle, the more important it is to use a fairleed. In the long term, a fairleed will save you in rope buying costs.

7. What Battery Is Best For A Winch?

What kind of battery you need, depends on which winch you have. Various manufacturers will give various recommendations. One might recommend a 650cca (cold crank amps) battery, while the other one recommends a minimum 12 amps/hour battery.

As I'm sure you'll understand, your battery will have to be powerful enough to power the winch. You can have a 9000lbs winch, but if it's powered by a battery that can't provide the required juice, it's only going to pull a small portion of said 9000lbs.

If you need a new battery for your winch, then you need to find out what brand/model winch you have. Once you know that, find the official manufacturer's page for your winch and have a look at which battery is recommended. If in doubt, please contact your winch's manufacturer.

8. Should I Buy Steel Or Synthetic Winch Rope?

Steel rope and synthetic rope each have their pros and cons. Which one works best for you, depends on your personal preference.

Steel winch rope is usually aircraft grade quality. It is less likely to fray and abrade. It is more durable and requires less maintenance. There is a small chance that it will rust. It can also get kinks. If your steel rope gets kinks, it will not only become waeker, but also harder to spool on the drum. It is heavier and less strong. From time to time, you can apply some WD40 oil to it to maintain it.

Synthetic winch rope is a relatively new invention. It didn't hit the scene until the mid nineties. It is made from hi-tech polyethylene and it is both stronger and lighter than steel rope. It can't get kinks. The most important benefit of synthetic rope is probably that it is safer. It doesn't nearly store as much energy as steel rope when under tension. If synthetic rope breaks, it will not become such a dangerous projectile as steel rope.

Synthetic rope is less durable than steel and also a bit more expensive. But the upside is that a synthetic rope can be fixed in the field with the proper braiding techniques. Due to its increased safety, most ATV owners go for synthetic rope, despite the higher cost.

9. What Is A Winch Plate?

This is the plate that is used to mount your winch to your ATV. Not all winches come with a plate. Be sure to check whether you already have a mounting plate before you buy. And if you don't, check to see if your winch of choice comes with a plate. If not, find a suitable plate and buy it. You can't mount your winch without it.

10. What Kind Of Grease Should I Use To Grease A Winch?

ATV owners use all sorts of grease to regrease their winches. It doesn't matter much. A few options are:

  • White lithium grease
  • Marine grease
  • Double-O / double ought / 00 grease

In Summary

If you've managed to plow your way through the wall of text above, then you obviously have just as much will power as the reviewed winches do pulling power. Kudos to you, my friend.

Rest assured that it was worth it. Because these are some of the best winches in the world.

I know from experience how hard it can be to find a good one. A good pulling device for your ATV is always going to require a significant financial investment from you. But then again, if you're buying a cool ATV, you can't afford to skimp out on the accessoiries.

I've reviewed a number of (relatively) cheap winches from various brands and with various pulling power. All for your convenience. It took me many days to gather all this knowledge. I figured I wanted to share it with the rest of the world. No sense in keeping it all to myself. I hope my winch guide has helped you.
