Timberland Men’s Chocorua Trail Gore-Tex Mid Hiking Boot Review
I have been a fan of Timberland shoes since I started hiking and trekking as a hobby. They have never failed me. And the pair I bought online- the Timberland Men’s Chocorua Trail Gore-Tex Mid Hiking boot is no exception. In fact, this pair is even a few notches better than the other models they have created. It has all the making of a good quality boot that Timberland is known for and a few extras to boot (pun intended, hehe!). But not all boots are made perfect. This model has its downside too, albeit a small one. So read on, find out what makes this shoe great and what makes this shoe imperfect and make an informed decision afterwards whether to purchase a pair or not.
- Its membrane is made of Gore- Tex, making it waterproof as well as well- ventilated.
- It has one of a kind anti- fatigue technology that makes it wearable for the whole day.
- It contains Primaloft insulation, about 400 grams.
Made from the same premium and authentic waterproof leather that it introduced in the early 1970’s, this model is certainly up there with its predecessors. You can wear it for long hour in the rain, snow or a mix of both- in slushy weather and your feet will continue to be as dry as chapped lips. The introduction of the Primaloft insulation is a plus because it keeps your tootsies warm enough and you need not worry about cold feet.
The design is quite similar to that of Timberland’s popular White Ledge pairs and looks sturdy as it is sturdy. This model comes in two colors: a combo of brown and green (making it look a bit like a camouflage boot) and brown of different shades. The rubbery outer sole, as always, will provide you great traction during treks and hikes. And the nubuck leather design on the upper gives wearers where comfort is key, something to root for.
You can bet that you can use them not only for trekking or hiking, but also for work, especially if your work area gets somewhat too cold or too wet for comfort. The Primaloft insulation and Gore- Tex lining has made sure of that. It is definitely one of the more versatile hike boot models that Timberland has designed. Being environment- friendly myself, I am always in awe of brands that try to be friendlier to Mother Nature than others and this is one of those things that made me stay with Timberland over the years. The materials in these shoes come from recycled components and they are strong and durable to boot.
Although I do not think this is applicable to all pairs that were created, there might be a bit of a challenge with breaking in the toe box part. The very firm leather might result to a crushed toe sensation, but once they are broken in, it should be perfectly ok again.
If you are a fan of both recycling and strong, durable shoes, then this is definitely the pair to go for.
Columbia Men’s Newton Ridge Plus Hiking Boot Review
There are traditional backpacking boots and then there are Columbia backpacking boots. Specifically Columbia Men’s Newton Ridge Plus Hiking boots. They are totally different and the latter is certainly far from those overrated brands out there. When it comes to outdoor boots, it seems that if you are a serious trekker, you would at least have one pair of trekking boots from Columbia. If you still do not have a pair, then I recommend this pair. This is probably and adventurer’s dream pair of trekking boots because it looks like it can withstand all terrain as well as all elements that might come its way.
- It has one of a kind Omni- Shield treatment, making it both water and stain resistant.
- Its shank is made of molded nylon.
- The outer sole is made of an Omni- Grip rubber compound.
Columbia has been well known worldwide for creating and designing quality hiker’s boots. And they did not disappoint us on this pair. The leather is still premium – waterproof and this time, with synthetic heel overlays that can withstand high abrasion. The outer material of the shoe has undergone Omni- Shield treatment, thereby making it stain resistant as well as waterproof. The outsole material is made of Omni- Grip rubber which is non- marking (proven and tested).
One of the best things of the Columbia Men’s Newton Ridge Plus Hiking boots is its design. It looks like a cross between a mid-cut hiking boot and an athletic looking shoe. Innovative and stylish. It might even be mistaken as a pair of rubber shoes at first glance. It comes in three color combinations: the Cordovan Treasure combo, the Mossy Oak and black combo and of course, the standard black and charcoal combo that Columbian fans can’t seem to do without.
Although this pair is going to be primarily used for hikes and treks (it is still a backpacking boot, after all), other people might get away with using this as their working boot. Waterproof, long walks are definitely the main focus on this design here and they were designed to work well for all sorts of terrain and weather and in longer hours. Columbia definitely did not compromise the quality on this model and lest the water goes above and beyond your ankles, they can guarantee that your feet will remain dry. The molded nylon shank will definitely serve its purpose, making this pair probably even more comfortable than other Columbia camping boots.
They seem to be a bit inconsistent when it comes to sizing. If you are usually a size 10, for example, you better purchase a size 10.5 for the perfect fit. Their size seems to be on the smaller scale. Apart from that, once you have purchased the right- sized pair, this will definitely be your outdoor boots for years to come.
The Columbia brand may not be as well- known as Nike of Converse but in the world of hiking and trekking, hikers and trekkers would own at least a pair of Columbia brand shoes.
KEEN Men’s Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot Review
Although the Keen brand is probably more known for their sandal line rather than camping boots, the Keen Men’s Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking boots seem good enough to compete with the other mountaineering boot brand out there in the market. They seem to have tried to place the best of both worlds together in the world of outdoor boots- the look and design of the athletic shoe and of course, the form and functionality of the traditional boot that was designed for hiking. Whether or not they have successfully molded it into this model is entirely up to you and to help you make that decision, I have purchased a pair for myself and here are some thoughts.
- It has a nubuck upper and a Keen Dry waterproof membrane that keeps your feet from getting wet.
- Its outsole does not leave any marks or scuffs.
- The foot bed has a contoured EVA foam that can be removed as needed, for added comfort.
The upper part of the shoe is made of textile and nubuck. The nubuck material makes the shoe waterproof (in addition to its KEEN. DRY-membrane that is also waterproof) and the textile material makes it comfortable than most tramping boots. The other materials that contribute to its comfortability are the EVA foams on its midsole and foot bed. The traction on this shoe is seemingly dependable because of the multi directional lug components.
While their design is a bit similar to that of Merrell’s (I can’t help but see a similarity), it is actually one of their stronger points. The wearer will stand out if he wears a pair of these because they do not look like your traditional hiker’s boot. In fact, this style comes in both shoe and boot designs. And out of the hundreds of backpacking boots out in the market, you will have more choices because of the five color combinations available: black and olive or yellow, shitake & brindle combo, chestnut & bossa nova, magnet & true blue combo and lastly, the black and drizzle combo.
The Keen Men’s Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking boots is definitely, first and foremost, a boot that is made for hiking. Aside from being waterproof, it can withstand terrains that are quite difficult to hike or trek on. You can also use it for brisk walks or maybe even for a run, given its sporty shoe design and one of the best things about this shoe is the presence of the ESS Shank, which significantly decreases the incidence of foot fatigue, thereby increasing the overall comfort level of the shoe. And aside from that (I take it back, there are two best things about this shoe, he he), one of the patented designs is the Keen.Protect, protecting your entire toe bed.
Although traction is good on this pair, it would have made it even better if I graded the traction part as excellent. The soles might become worse for wear in a few years time and traction might wear out too.
If you are still a beginner when it comes to hiking, I would recommend this pair.
Hi-Tec Men’s Bandera Mid WP Hiking Boot Review
The Hi- Tec brand has been a dependable brand of tramping boots for decades. Starting out in 1978, they were actually the brand that first introduced the first pairs of lightweight boots designed for hiking (I do not know for sure, but probably the trekking boots before those times were as heavy as steel- toed boots). They have already made themselves known all around the world and when they introduced these boots to the market for the first time, the market was not disappointed to say the least. These guys are known for making high quality outdoor boots at quite competitive prices. I purchased a pair of these boots and here is what I have to say about them.
- 5 inches: that is the distance from the arch to the shaft.
- The shanks are made of steel, which provides more stability and support, especially when going through muddy or slippery terrain.
- Its cupsole is made of rubber for better traction.
The upper part of the shoe is made of suede with a mesh of breathable nylon. This keeps the shoe both waterproof and well- ventilated. The shoe designers also did not forget the comfort aspect as they made sure that the shoes’ midsole contain EVA foam that will absorb impact. Aside from providing good traction because of its rubber outsole, the outsole itself is made of carbon rubber, which is gentle on floors as it does not leave scuff marks and such.
The suede component of the shoe really contributes to its stylish and classic look as well as its uniqueness because traditional camping boots are not made from suede. Hike or camp out with your buddies on these babies and you would probably the best dressed hiker of the group. It comes in two color combinations: the taupe and gold color combo and the bone, brown and mustard color combo.
The Hi- Tec brand has always been all about a balancing act between three factors: quality, comfort and light weight. These are three standard things that are always present in their outdoor boots. But one good thing they introduced with the Hi-Tec Men’s Bandera Mid WP Hiking boots is its versatility. Not only for hiking, this pair can be used in other adventures and misadventures such as bouldering, camping and even trailblazing. The stylish suede look can also make these shoes be worn for more low key activities.
There might be an itty bitty challenge when it comes to finding the right size of the shoe as the sizes might come off as inconsistent but overall, this is a great outdoor boot.
The Hi- Tec brand may not be as well- known as Reebok or Fila but hiking and trekking enthusiasts can definitely tell you that when it comes to outdoor activities, they are one of the more trusted brands in the market so I recommend you to buy a pair and try it out for yourselves.
Merrell Men’s Moab Peak Mid Ventilator Hiking Boot Review
I do not have any idea where the Merrell employees come up with the names of their hiking boot models but they certainly are a mouthful. Anyway, even if you run out of breath just saying the name, the Merrell Men’s Moab Peak Mid Ventilator Hiking boots are definitely one to consider when it comes to the challenging task of shopping for outdoor boots. They are of course not your average run- of- the- mill pair of moutaineering boots and it may just look like an ordinary pair of running shoes but worry not because these boots were made for hiking.
- An adjustable circumference makes the shoe more comfortable to wear, especially for long hours.
- It is made from several different materials: textile, synthetic and leather (sole is synthetic).
- The lining is M Select Fresh, preventing foot odor even before it starts.
The toecap of the shoe is made of rubberized material, thereby increasing the shoes’ overall safety standards. The tongue is bellowed, which protects the shoe better from accumulating several different types of debris. Overall support is improved because of a TPU shank in the shoe, which is visible to the wearer. The shoes heels are also air cushioned aside from being provided with EVA material in the foot frame to also increase the overall comfortability of the wearer.
You will know that it is a Merrell pair of shoes just by looking at its design. It has turned away from the traditional design of trekking boots because it is definitely lighter and more comfortable to wear. The walnut color blends perfectly with natural surroundings and its mid- height cut design makes you stand out from a crowd of mountaineers and hikers who are all wearing traditional camping boots. The shoes come in two color combinations: Castle Rock and Black Slate.
You can never go wrong with a brand like Merrell. For this model, the shoes provide enough traction and stability, making it a great backpacking boot and the comfort it provides to the wearer also makes it a good running shoe (although it is recommended mainly for hiking because of its weight). You can use them for cross country trekking or hiking as well as on your normal jogging routine and they would not look out of place in either activity.
In my honest opinion, there are only two things that keep this shoe from becoming a perfect hiking boot: they need to remove the mesh located at the lower part of the upper because it causes the foot to get a bit dirty in muddy terrain and also they need to add a TPU plate for added protection.
I would give these babies an overall score of 4.5 because they have upped the ante of boots for hiking in terms of style, function and comfort. This is probably one of the best hiking boots that Merrell has introduced in recent years.
