nrs1Dansko and Sanita are both respected and popular names, when it comes to making quality footwear. Both offer similar quality comfort in their shoes. Choosing between the two can be quite challenging, considering that they are both similar in styling and appearance. Both produce shoes with excellent merits. Here are some of specifics you should know about the two brands.

Sanita vs Dansko - Which Ones Are Better?

Both shoes have the same appearance, considering that it was the same company, until it split in two a few years ago. However, there are some minor differences between the two, which are not easily noticeable. For example, the new design produced by Dansko, comes with a broader heel base.

On the other hand, the Sanita shoe does not come with the rubber piping, normally found at the throat of the shoe. The broader heel base in Dansko’s shoes makes them more stable and at the same time prevents ankle rolling. The cleaner design by Sanita has eliminated the rubbing problem that has been noted by some wearers.

Both shoes are readily available online on Amazon, among other retailers. However, many people have complained that it is hard to get the right size, when it comes to purchasing Dansko shoes online. The shoes have been made by hand, which creates the variance in sizing. Sanita shoes are cheaper than Dansko. They are also available in a wide range of finishes and color patterns.

Although both shoes have received excellent reviews over the years, most people prefer Sanita. The reason behind this is that the shoe is of a higher quality and cheaper. If you live in the US, you might prefer purchasing Dansko, since they have outlets there. Other deciding factors include overall appearance and color, since they are different. Sanita clogs are produced in Europe while Dansko are made in China. Whichever brand you choose, you will get a great offer and still purchase a high quality shoe.

Why Dansko /Sanita Clogs For Nurses and Waitresses?

clg1Sanita and Dansko professional clogs provide comfort at work for nurses and waitresses, who are always on the go. The shoes are slip resistant, classically fashionable and available in attractive colors and styles. They are very suitable for people with wide or flat feet. Considering that nurses and waitresses spend a considerable amount of time standing up at work, they require a comfortable shoe.

Dansko and Sanita clogs come with an arch supporting footbed and a durable shock absorbing outsole. They have also been manufactured with moisture absorbing, breathable linings and leather, to provide comfort and promote foot health to nurses and waitresses.

Which Dansko/Sanita Clog Size Should I Buy?

nrs3Fitting a professional clog is different from fitting other shoes, even when the clog comes with a back. Clogs are meant to provide a loose fit to the foot. When you are fitting open-back clogs, you should ensure that the heel lands at the footbed’s back, leaving a tiny space under or over. This is to ensure that the clog provides good control and secure grip during the shoe’s movement.

Closed back clogs are designed to minimize the possibility that the shoe slips off at the back of the foot. Despite this provision, clogs are not designed to fit closely like other shoes. They are meant to fit loosely enough to allow for up and down movement as you walk. Therefore, when it comes to fitting closed back clogs, ensure that there is approximately 0.25 inches behind the heel, to allow the clog to move freely, without running the risk of developing blisters.

How To Take Care Of Dansko & Sanita Clogs?

nrs2One of the main reasons why Sanita and Dansko professional clogs are popular, is their simplicity in terms of maintenance. They are easy to take care of and clean. Nubuck and Suede protector spray should be applied to these shoes, before putting them on. Men have been applying Scotch Guard to their ties to prevent stains from drinks and food. Nubuck Suede protector spray works in a similar manner.

Dansko and Sanita clogs are easy to maintain because plain soapy water can be enough to clean them. However, you should note that leather should not be saturated during cleaning. You just need to use a damp and soapy piece of cloth for cleaning them. After that, use a slightly wet cloth or sponge to wipe the residue away and you are done with the cleaning. Shoe polish can be enough to touch up basic ordinary marks.

Before wearing professional clogs, you need to first apply to them a Beeswax conditioner. This conditioner helps to weatherproof them, thereby preventing the shoes from becoming damaged when they are exposed to different kinds of wet weather. Since the shoes are covered with oil, any liquid that drops on them does not stick and it can be easily removed with a damp cloth or your bare hands. This is one of the main reasons why Dansko and Sanita clogs are popular with nurses and waitresses.

Applying the Nubuck Suede protector spray to these professional clogs before wearing them, is a good investment. When you apply the conditioners early on, you will keep your shoes looking newer for longer, even when they are regulary exposed to bad weather conditions. Having to buy a replacement pair is always going to be more expensive.

Where To Find Dansko & Sanita Clogs On Sale At A Discount?

clg2Due to their popularity, Dansk and Sanita clogs are widely available, both online and in physical retail stores. The first place where you can find them at discounted prices, is online at Amazon. You can also try out eBay, clog outlets or even shop directly from the companies’ websites. You will definitely find these high arch shoes at discounted prices. Other retailers include Online Shoes, Zappos and Scrubs & Beyond. A simple web search will also produce hundreds of online retailers for both shoes.

How Long Do Dansko & Sanita Clogs Last?

Sanita and Dansko clogs are produced with superior tanning methods and materials of the highest quality. They are designed this way to ensure they are available in outstanding colors and flexible strength. The two companies guarantee their shoes to be free from any manufacturer defect, after a considerable time of wear.

Although the two companies do not offer a lifetime warranty, the shoes are designed to last for a long time. On average, the shoes can last between two to three years, depending on use and maintenance. With the right care and maintenance, these shoes are guaranteed to take you through your work schedule and hold up for a long time.

Are Dansko / Sanita Clogs Recommended For Plantar Fasciitis?

clg3Dansko and Sanita clogs are recommended by podiatrists worldwide, as good clogs for providing pain relief. Heel pain is very often caused by plantar fasciitis. The shoes feature a stiff outsole, an elevated heel and proper arch support. These shoes are great for alleviating several painful foot conditions.

If you have plantar fasciitis, heel or arch pain, you will benefit greatly with these shoes due to their built in torsional stability and arch support. If you have medium height arch and wide foot, then these are great shoes for you. For people with narrow feet, it is advisable to purchase the narrower clogs in order to obtain a perfect fit.

How To Stretch Dansko / Sanita Clogs If They Are Uncomfortable?

oldJust like other leather shoes, Dansko and Sanita clogs will stretch automatically after wearing them for some time. If you want to stretch them, wear them with thick socks, the first days when you wear them. Alcohol can also be used to stretch Dansko and Sanita clogs if they are uncomfortable. Just rub them slightly with alcohol on the inside, stuff some rags or towels inside, then let the shoe stay like that overnight. However, alcohol runs the risk of spoiling the leather if used too many times.

Alternatively, you can purchase a shoe stretcher that is available in most shops selling shoes. Insert the stretcher inside the shoe any time you are not wearing them, until you have room enough in there. A vamp raiser or shoe instep stretcher is designed to stretch the vamp or the instep area of the shoes. Most shoe stretchers are made with a piece of hardwood. They fit deep inside the shoes, thus raising the instep.

How To Stop Dansko / Sanita Shoes From Squeaking?

Some Sanita and Dansko shoes tend to produce a squeaking sound when you walk. Although this problem can most often not be eliminated entirely, there are several means of minimizing it. One way is by putting a strip of cloth tape at the bottom part of the shoes. This method works and does not reduce traction in any way. Alternatively, you can try cleaning the soles since the squeaking might have been caused by something that you stepped on, like a cleaning solution. Cleaning the soles will remove the material and stop the squeaking. You can also remove the inner sole and apply some baby powder on the bottom of it, and it will very often reduce the squeaking.

About the Author

Hi, I’m Brian Bradshaw. I’m a super duper mega hiking enthusiast, with a love for everything that has to do with outdoors, hiking, gear, footwear and more.

    1. Not sure what you’d like to join or try there, buddy. If you can clarify your question for me, I’d be happy to answer.

  1. This is a very inaccurate sales article. Sanita and Dansko were not the same company. I currently own a Sanita pair that I’ve had for 10 years or more, the sole is fine, but the synthetic top is blistering and peeling away. No, it is not leather. I have also had Danskos. I tried on a new pair of the same size of Sanitas recently and I couldn’t even get my foot into it. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any way to repair the uppers, unless I covered them with housepaint or something. I had the open back Sanitas for years, loved them, but the padding across the top edge wore off, they ended up tearing. I miss them badly. I replaced them with a Dansko pair that are okay. When the inside lining tore up, I was able to cover it with moleskin and continue wearing them. So, it would seem with most clogs, the soles will last forever, if one piece of hard rubber or synthetic, but the tops won’t.

    1. Hi Luigi,

Thanks for your insights. Based on what you’ve told me about Sanita and Dansko not being the same company, I’ve dug into the details once more to find out what’s true. Via Clog Outlet I found the following:

Since the early 1990s until August 2007, all Dansko Professional clogs and all Dansko Stapled Clogs had been manufactured by Sanita in Europe. The distribution agreement between Dansko and Sanita ended in August 2007. Shortly after that time, Sanita began distributing the same products directly in the US under their own name.

If you have a pair of Dansko stapled clogs purchased before 2008, look at the bottom of the sole and you will see patent 0060240 engraved into the sole. This indicates that your clogs were made by Sanita according to their patented construction. If you have a pair of really old Dansko clogs, you may even see Sanita stamped on the bottom as well as the patent number mentioned above.

Had my statement been wrong, I would’ve gladly corrected it. But from the looks of it, it is correct, so I will leave it as such.

It’s true that the tops may peel away for some pairs and for some people. If this is a recurring problem for you, maybe try a pair that’s all leather and no synthetic finish?

Thanks for your tip on repairing torn inlining with moleskin. My readers and I sure do appreciate that!

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  2. I have a pair of Dansko professional suede clogs that I bought used but in good condition. The suede uppers were and still are beautiful and they look and feel brand new. The soles looked fine and I wore them for a few months on and off.

Suddenly chunks of rubber started falling out. I thought it was mud from outside until I looked at the bottoms. They are cracked and crumbling, and the parts still intact looked like they are MELTING. Weird.

So I looked up “Dansko crumbling” and got tons of hits. It is a known problem that the newer Dansko made in China don’t last as long and the suspicion is that they are not using as high a quality of rubber.

It’s a shame because the uppers seem to be very good quality. One source said Sanita is the new Dansko. Now I’m afraid to buy any used or new Danskos. It will be Sanita from now on. There is a clear difference to me, after this experience. I’d be happy to send photos if anyone cares to see them.

    1. Hi Karen,

Thanks for sharing your experience with me and my readers. It’s much appreciated. Perhaps people ought to switch to Sanita for the time being, while the production issue with crumbling rubber is solved.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

      1. Best to stay away from the Chicom dansko. I had a euro made dansko that had the same problem. Since the 15 pairs of Sanitas Professional.

    2. Yes, the soles will crumble and disintegrate after they get too hot- like they were left on top of a heat vent or in a hot warehouse. I’ve had the same thing happen when I’ve bought them used. You can look this up on ebay. As well, if the shoes are over10 or sometimes, 7 or 8 years old the soles often get dried out and start cracking or falling apart just like anything plastic does with age.

      1. Hi d,

The crumbling happens when you don’t wear them. This distributor’s comment explains it nicely.

        Sincerely,

        Brian

  3. I recently commented on “Dansko crumbling”, a phenomenon in which the soles of Dansko professional style clogs literally crumble, crack, and seem to melt. This is happening to a pair of mine that look brand new otherwise and it has not happened to me before. It seems to be well known online.

I want to make one more comment, because I checked the bottoms of these crumbling shoes and they have “PATENT 0060240” stamped on them, outside of a box around the logo “Dansko”, just like all my other Dansko clogs. This means that according to your quote above in response to Luigi, Sanitas made them. So, I no longer feel as if I know which brand would last longer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you figure out what’s going on, I’d sure like to hear about it.

    1. Hi Karen,

I just published your previous comment. Thanks for another one!

It’s too bad you’re experiencing this problem right now. Most people, that I know of, don’t have it. It’s possible you’ve had bad luck and got a pair from a bad lot.

Most important is, ofcourse, that you get some kind of compensation. I’d contact your retailer, if I were you.

Let me know how that goes.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

      1. ALL my older dansko sandals and clogs soles have cracked and crumbled. Almost like chunks and sawdust. What a waste of money.

  4. Is Sanita now going by the name Bjork? It looks like that might be happening but it is hard to sort out!

    1. Hi Robynn,

I think Bjork is simply a different brand. Sanita still exists, as far as I can tell.

      I guess we’ll see.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  5. Glad to have found someone else that loves their clogs! I would like to point out that SOME of the Sanita styles are made in China now. The Nikolette was made in China – that is maybe more of a “fashion forward” type of clog and not meant for work shoes. I wish they would post that information freely, but it’s hard to find. I have a (Chinese) pair that is slightly different from the Nikolette but it has the same type of sole. I don’t care for this sole anywhere near as much – it feels hollow and is sort of weird to walk on. They are more of a cute shoe, not a work shoe. I know the Nikolette style is an older style, and so is the style I have, so I don’t know if they are still producing in China. Maybe you have more info on that. Cheers!

    1. Hi Bobbie,

Thanks for the invaluable insights you’ve shared with me and my readers. I had no idea about any of this. I also can’t add anything to it, so… thanks for dropping a comment!

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  6. Like Karen, I had a pair of black professional Danskos that suddenly started crumbling. I couldn’t believe it was happening, as my first pair of oiled leather Danskos lasted at least 10-15 years before my toe wore out a hole in the top of the shoe. I practically lived in those clogs, they were so comfortable and were all I could wear for three years while my stress fractures healed (circa 2000-2005). My Dansko wardrobe grew once I discovered how comfortable they are and how long they last. Dollar for dollar, they are a very inexpensive shoe! But the black pair never broke in and always felt stiff. Shortly after the crumbling started, the sole started splitting away from the shoe. I tossed them. I guess I’ll try a Sanita, as I want to replace my missing clogs.

    1. Hi Kathi,

It seems these cases of ‘bad luck’ are happening a little more frequently these days, although most women still have good experiences with their Danskos.

Have you tried contacting the Dansko company to have a conversation with them? You’d be surprised what companies will sometimes do for you to make up for it, just so long as you ask them politely!

Let’s hope Dansko step up their game in the years to come.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  7. Hi
I’m a distributor of Sanita, and manufacturer of Wellness Footwear in Australia. I think I can provide a little insight to the crumbling. The rubber/plastic compound used to make the soles of both the Dansko and Sanita clogs relies on the warmth and moisture from your feet to keep it supple and flexible. We have found that if left sitting on a shelf for several, and sometimes just a few, months the compound becomes brittle and will crumble.
If you have a pair and wear them consistently they will last and last. But if not, they will deteriorate.
From this we can learn that both have a shelf life and it’s not indefinite.

    1. Hi Toni,

      A valuable addition, for sure.

Thanks for taking the time to comment about the rubber crumbling issue!

      Sincerely,

      Brian

    2. Never had this crumbling sole problem with Sanita. Actually I do building deconstruction and find that Sanitas have prevented any nail penetration thru the sole when stepped on.

      1. Hi Willie,

Thanks for a valuable addition to the conversation!

        Sincerely,

        Brian
