If you're like me, you like to stand tall and firm. In that case, combat, army or military boots might be your thing. Combat boots are called that for a reason. Usually, they are worn by soldiers during combat, either live or just training. They are usually black and made leather and rubber. The combination of materials chosen, doesn't usually make a difference in the sturdiness of the boot. It's just a matter of taste. A personal preference, so to say. Most of them are waterproof, because it's essential that they protect the wearer from cold water coming in direct contact with their skin. You can't fight a good fight when you're feet are freezing. When the feet suffer, the wearer's entire performance will suffer. This is unacceptable in real life combat situations.
There is a surprising amount of technology behind the army boot. Most of these technologies have also leaked into the manufacturing of hiking boots. Think about Gore-Tex nylon side panels, for example. These will give you much better comfort and will also improve ventilation. This technology originates in this type of boot, but has also been incorporated into modern hiking boots nowadays. Gore-Tex is a very suitable material for making boots like these, because the material is both waterproof as well as breathable. This is a golden combination of properties not found in most other materials.
The very first military boots were used by the Roman empire, many hundreds of years ago. These soldiers used to be supplied with so called hobnail boots. And to this very day, you can still buy boots with hobnails. Hobnails are nails on the front sole of the boots. They are used for getting better traction. It can really help when you're going uphill, or even up a wall. This is sometimes required when you are in a serious combat situation. Hobnails can also help you win a fight with your enemy. I sure hope you won't run into such a situation when you are simply enjoying your hobnail shoes in everyday civilian life.

How To Find The Best Combat Boots?
There are so many different kind of army boots that it can be hard to choose which one is best for you. But I'm not just talking about different brands here. I'm also talking about countries of origin. Every single country in the world has its own army (well, almost every country has its own army). And every army has a different kind of boot for their soldiers. The army boots that a civilian can buy on Amazon are, as far as I know, the very same combat boots that they were in the actual military. While the military usually wears high cut boots, you can also get low cut boots. These are usually ankle boots for women, though. Speaking of which... if you're a woman that wants to look cute, yet tough... feminine, yet bold... then be sure to have a look at these pink combat boots. They're totally cute!!!
You can read more about all different kinds of footgear at the REI website. It's a great source of information and I've learned a lot from them.
But you can buy boots from more than one country in your own country. Go take a look in a mall if there's still one open near you. Enter any shoe store and you'll probably find a pair of Australian Terra combat boots in there. These are a very popular import boot for some reason. I don't know why, because no boot has ever received more complaints than the Autralian one. It's got rotting soles in hot climates and whatnot. Totally useless.
Thankfully, Australians aren't the only ones that know how to manufacture a military boot. There are plenty of other countries who produce them, such as the UK, France, Sweden, Norway, Spain, South Africa, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Etc.
Every country has its very own, distinct type of military boot. So there's something to go around for everybody. Most of my USA readers will probably be on the patriotic side and go for a USA boot. Nothing wrong with that. I own a pair of made in the USA army boots myself. But then again, there's also nothing wrong with going for a German boot or a Swiss boot. These look pretty good too. Especially the older classic ones. But you can get reproductions from the old ones. It'll be like taking a step (pun intended) back in time, except you're not stuck with decades of wear and tear on your boots already.
Who would have thought that military style boots would ever be a considered a fashion item? Well, it's true. For many years already, these types of boots are worn not only by military personnel, but also by artsy smartsy people that want to make a fashion statement. And truth be told, army boots can make a person look like a million bucks. They're not just for trampling all over your enemy, they're for showing the world how much taste you've got!
Not only have these boots become popular because of the fashion statement that you can make with them. No... they're also very long lasting. They're made for lasting a long time, because soldiers put a lot of stress on their boots for a long period of time when they are behind enemy lines and engaging in actual survival situations. A pair of shoes that loses its soles is no good for a soldier boy. Because of the economy, people have taken a turn to the army boot because they want to get a lot of bang for their buck. And bang for your buck you shall have when you take out your wallet for a good pair of military boots.
Another great advantage to army boots is the fact that you can wear them all year long. Sure, it gets boring after a while... but from a purely functional point of view, it's just downright practical. When wearing black leather Gore-Tex rubber boots made in the USA, you've got yourself a boot that is both waterproof as well as breathable.
The waterproofness (for lack of a better word) will help you keep your feet warm and dry in the winter. The breathability (also for lack of a better word) will help you keep your feet cool and dry in the summer.
If you're dead serious about having lots of breathing room for your feet in the summer, then maybe you should consider getting an extra pair of hiking sandals. Because no matter how breathable a boot is, it's never going to be as breathable as any open type of footwear such as a sandal.
There's some type of footwear to go around for everybody. Just make sure you've made up your mind about what it is that you want before you make your purchase. This is especially true if you're buying cheap, low priced boots at a discount online from Amazon (or any other retailing outlet for that matter). Oh, and be sure to check your size too!
Combat Boot History
Army combat boots for men and women are getting popular these days. Some say there is no different in a boot that's 'army' and a boot that's 'combat'. The are arguably the exact same thing. However, some people are of the opinion that a boot really needs to have some sort of military style to it in order to qualify as 'army'. Not that any of this matters, because it's all subjective and you're going to buy the boots that you want anyway. I don't like to get into the nitty gritty of what counts as 'combat' and what counts as 'army'. What you call your footwear is pretty much irrelevant. Just so long as it looks good on you. And it also needs to give you good support, ofcourse. Otherwise your footwear would be worse than useless.
If anybody needs to have good support while they're doing their job, it's the military. When you're a soldier and you're behind enemy lines fighting for our freedom, then you'd better be doing it with good shoes. Not that you can afford to be wearing sandals while doing 'mere' rescue and relief work. Because that's just as important as the fighting work. For almost a hundred years, US soldiers have worn military boots that have helped them accomplish their goals. One such example is the Trench Boot from 1917. These were very popular at the start of World War I. The Trench Boot was considered to be the successor to the so called Russet Marching Shoe. Boots over shoes, you know.
Since this was one of the first boots to be made especially with combat in use, it wasn't exactly the best the world had ever seen. As with every first generation of any product, there was plenty of stuff to fix about it. And it all started with making the boots waterproof. Trench Boots allowed for great quantities of water to be soaked up and this actually worked against soldiers. The successor to the Trench Boot was the Pershing Boot. The production of this was overseen by General Pershing, who had the boots named after him in his honor. The Pershing Boot didn't solve the water problem, though.
It wasn't until World War II that the US saw its very first military boots that were worth of the name. They were called the "Boots Combat Service". Kind of a silly name, but they did gain a very good reputation in very little time. These boots came with the M-1943 Uniform Ensemble. The BCS were a modified service shoe, with an extra top cuff added. The cuff made the shoes pretty tall. They double buckle system made it so that the boot would be a very sturdy fit. And indeed, this boot never came off anybody that wore it during high intensity combat situations. Soldiers were able to perform their duties with great foot support.
It wasn't until much later, long after World War II, that the US military switched to black leather, shiny boots for military purposes. This was the type of boot that was worn mostly in the Vietnam war. In Vietnam, soldiers were fighting their way through the jungle. This gave birth to the so called jungle boot. Jungle boots have vent holes in the instep, so that moisture can seep out. The military did consider the use of non shiny boots. The decision was made to switch to these, coming from shiny boots. The non shiny version was more functional than their shiny counterpart. It also seems to me that shiny shoes make a soldier stand out more to the enemy. And you don't have to be a rocket scientist in order to figure out that's a bad thing.
Modern day soldier's boots are all waterproof and give great support. Their only requirements are that they are at least 8 inches tall. Good ankle support is an absolute requirement for a soldier who frequently travels long distances, and usually across rough terrains. That's the only functional requirements, that is. Another requirement is that they display the so called "Eagle, Globe, Anchor" insignia. The eagle represents the US and the freedom for which it stands. The globe represents the fact that the US is willing to help all across the globe. The anchor represents the fact that the US has an impressive navy with which it can reach all across the globe via the waters.
These days, the most popular boots that are issued in the US military are the Belleville 500 USMC, and the Danner RAT. These are all all-terrain boots. Some of them are better for hot weather (desert boots). Others are better for keeping out water. A soldier's got to pick whichever boot he's going to wear based on the conditions he'll be operating in.
These days, army boots are a real big fashion statement. There are many music genres whose artists and fants want to wear these types of boots, despite not ever having been in the military (and not planning on it either). Think about grunge, punk, industrial, goth and heavy metal. For years now, these kind of boots have started becoming more and more mainstream. It's not just a fashion statement either. Many people want to save a few bucks in this god awful economy that we've been living in for well over a decade now. People are starting to get poorer with each passing year. Is it any wonder that they are opting for a long term boot rather than a fashionable shoe that's going to fall apart after a year?
The great thing about a sturdy set of boots is not only that they last a long time, but they also lend themselves to be repaired and recrafted really easily. This gives the added bonus of making aged boots look 'vintage'. Compare it to a guitar that's got a few nicks and scratches. It gives the thing character. The exact same thing can be said for boots. Vintage is modern, I always say!
These boots are gaining in popularity rapidly. However, not every mainstream shoe store has these. If you want to get your hands on a pair of good boots straight from Uncle Sam, then you will have to search for a military surplus store. These can be found in every city of moderate size. The surplus store sells stuff that the military has disposed of. Just because the military disposed of it, it doesn't automatically mean that it's all low grade trash. Sometimes, a soldier replaces his boots because he switched to another pair. Good news for all of you, because now you can pick up these used boots at a surplus store near you!

On the upside, you do get what you pay for, as this is a pretty high quality boot, that is guaranteed to have high durability. So it will last a long time, meaning you are going to get bang for your buck.

They are designed to be comfortable pretty much the whole day. It's got great zippers and gussets, meaning you are going to have a really easy time taking the boot on and off. This is also what makes this boot very comfortable.
It's a very warm boot, but not so warm that you will get uncomfortable. You can wear it all day long without getting tired feet. These soles move over rocky terrain like you're walking on a cloud. It has very soft support under the heels. Highly recommended for army vets and citizens alike.

Danner once sold another model of this boot, but has upgraded this newer model with a vibram sole and the lightweight TFX platform. The boot is constructed for giving you stability and speed. Its uppers are made of rough leather that is highly durable, ensuring it won't fall apart on you just like that. The uppers contain lightweight 1000 Denier nylon for extra stability at the cost of only very little extra weight.
The so called Vibram Striker Torrent outsole gives you great grip in all directions, due to its original lug pattern, which can be best described as 'pentagonally pivoted'.
These boots are being worn by actual soldiers doing actual tours in Iraq. There are a few on Amazon that speak highly of these boots. However, for some guys... they are too small and they need to be returned in order to be exchanged for a bigger size model. Be sure to pay attention to the sizing when buying these boots.
Whether you are a vet or a construction / masonry worker... these are the boots for you.
3. Men's Under Armour UA Valsetz Side Zip Tactical Boot
Next to Danner, Under Armour creates some of the best military boots under the sun. These UA Valsetz have a really nice side zip which make them easy to put on. They come with a compression molded EVA midsole, which gives your foot all the cushioning it requires. They are lightweight and water resistant, as you might expect from a combat boot of this caliber.
Under Armour UA Valsetz features:
- ArmourBound (responsive cushioning)
- ArmourGuide (foot strike guidance from impact to propulsion)
- Compression molded, fully contoured EVA midsole cushioning
- Lightweight mesh, water resistance, highly breathable, great comfort
- Same as regular UA Valsetz model, except with side zipper for easy putting on and taking off
- Synthetic material
Under Armour knows its stuff. These boots are being given raving reviews on Amazon. The best review comes from a firefighter who wears these boots for up to 16 hours a day when he's fighting fires. He speaks highly of the UA Valsetz boot, because it is so super comfortable.
You might get a bit of squeeking from these boots until you have broken them in, but boy oh boy... are they worth it. These boots happened to fall apart after 4 months for the firefighter, but he got them replaced from Under Armour.
Sometimes, good boots get bad reviews because they just so happen to be made by a sleepy person who was working shoddily at the time. But in all fairness, there is no inherent design or manufacturing flaw with these boots whatsoever.
If you happen to strike out with these boots, then Under Armour will probably replace them. So what do you have to lose? Not much, the way I see it.

They may start showing nicks in the soles after a few weeks, but don't think for one second that the sole will wear and tear quickly. It won't. Going by the existing reviews on Amazon, they are going to last and last long.
Hey can you tell me what the boots are when you say: “it wasn’t until World War II that the US saw it’s first military boots” — they are black and round at the tip. They aren’t listed in your too boots but there is a picture of them.
Thanks,
Leigham
Hi Leigham,
I see you’ve also emailed me this question. I have done some research and emailed you what info I was able to dig up. Good luck!
Brian
So what’s the answer, Brian ???? Some of us other people would like to know…..
I gave Leigham a lead via email, so he could figure it out.
But now I have tracked down the photographer of the boots myself. I sent her an email to ask.
Once she replies, I will share the revelation with you!
Okay, so the photographer, Katja Kaikkonen, couldn’t remember, because they were on the feet of a friend she hadn’t had contact with in a long time.
But I kept pressing and got her to contact her friend. If the friend recalls correctly, they are Alpha Rangers combat boots.
Googling this will reveal exactly such boots, so I’m guessing that Katja’s friend recalls correctly!
The boot in question is a US Service Shoe from the Second World War. They had similar shoes in service prior to this, before switching to full, 8-inch boots during the Korean War. The Service Shoe was meant to be worn with leg gaiters or ‘putees’ wrapped around the leg.
“[combat boots] ……They are usually black and make of either leather or rubber.”
Making such a statement instantly disqualifies the writer.
I turned in my last pair of active-duty black boots about 12 years ago, when the ACU/FRACU uniforms came in. And it had been at least 5 years prior to that since we had even worn black boots.
“leather or rubber” …. no, not “or”—- leather uppers and synthetic rubber soles.
SWAT teams and similar combat wannabees wear black boots for the same reason that the bulls-eye in a paper target is black: it contrasts with most common urban backgrounds in daylight and makes the wearer a better target.
Hi MSG R,
Thanks for your useful insights.
If you’ll take a look, you’ll notice that many boots currently featured on this page are, in fact, black.
As for your other suggestion… I’ve edited the article to more accurately reflect facts.
Thanks for the help!
Sincerely,
Brian
Hi Brian,
Thank you so much for making such an informative page. I stumbled upon it after hours of searching for any information on the Doc Marten “Pier” as it was the first and last boot I wore on the daily for 2 years until the heal came off. After so many hours of googling, however, it looks to have been discontinued a year after they came out around 2013. I found that Doc Marten changed the name of their “Pier” style of boot to the “Sabien-7” around 2016 after changing the type of leather…but they don’t carry that on their website catalog anymore, either. The only pair of black boots of “Pier” or “Sabien-7” styles left to this world only come in size 7-8 Men’s US.
I sure could use some recommendations for a style of boot of comparable quality and style. Seems as if I can only find the rugged, zipper-less, cap toed boots with Goodyear Welt construction that I’ve come to love in women’s section, and… well.. they don’t fit.
Thanks, wish you the best.
-Nick
Hi Nick,
There’s a Sabien available on Amazon right now.
Would that work for you?
Sincerely,
Brian
