  1. I am looking for a High Boot that gives strong support in the ankle. Since I have Plantar Fasciitis I will need a boot that would help with the pain. Could you let me know if you have a boot that could help me.

    1. Hi Missy,

Hiking shoes usually come with good heel support out of the box. If hiking shoes didn’t support you, they wouldn’t be much good in the first place.

If you want to increase your heel support in any shoe, try Tread Labs insoles.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  2. I was wearing either a cross-trainer or walking New Balance sneakers with my wide/flat feet. At times, I have also suffered from arthritis, Morton’s Neuroma an planatar fasciitis. I overpronate and suffered cellulitis in my left foot and could not wear my New Balance sneakers so started wearing the Moab from Merrill and these were wider to accommodate my swollen foot (even wider than the New Balance 4W). Am I doing myself a disservice? I found that the New Balance model I was wearing had the tongue sewn-in later and the laces never stayed tied so I must have tied them too tight and the tongue made an abrasion on my foot. The Merrills are all one piece inside with the tongue.

    1. Hi Andy,

Thanks for sharing these insights with me and my readers. Good job on persevering just as long until you’ve found something that works for you.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  3. Hi Brian, I love Merrell boots for their comfort and arch support. But I find them really slippery on wet surfaces. While friends rarely slip over, I am like Bambi on ice in some terrains. Is there a Merrell boot (or any other make) that manages to combine top class arch support with good grip? Thanks

    1. Hi John,

My go-to brand is KEEN. I never slip on them, even when jumping from one slippery rock to the next.

If you want top notch support, put Tread Labs in your boots. You’ll never go back. Trust me on that one.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  4. I am experiencing heel pain after hiking over 5 miles.
I suspect that a shoe with greater cushioning in the hell would help, as thicker socks help a bit.

    1. Could you recommend a specific PF shoe to mitigate this ?
    2. Would mid ankle height boots be better than low cut ?

    1. Hi Richard,

I’d go for a KEEN, myself. They have nice cushioning and strike just the right balance between stiff & flexible.

For PF, you want a shoe that doesn’t lock your foot in completely, but also a shoe that takes the balancing load off of your foot, so that it can rest properly.

I don’t think the shoe/boot height is going to make any difference.

      Sincerely,

      Brian
