Nursing is a demanding job that commands great respect.
Therefore, all you nurses out there should be comfortable to the max in their daily grind, to ensure that they effectively and efficiently deliver their care to their patients.
What nurses need:
A pair of high quality and comfortable nursing shoes.
And when you're investing in a good pair of shoes, you better know for certain that you're not accidentally going for a pair of cheap knock-offs!
But more on that later...
Considering the nature of your work, your life almost literally depends on a good quality pair of nursing shoes, that gives you all day comfort.
According to the statistics, around 33% of nurses in the U.S suffer from back and feet pain. Most of these cases can be attributed to wearing inappropriate shoes.
Don't be the 33%!
So here are some important things to consider when buying nursing shoes.
Weight and Comfort
Considering that you will be wearing shoes almost daily and for long hours, the weight of the shoes is a very crucial consideration. Clunky or heavy shoes can have a negative impact on your comfort level. This can affect your performance and productivity. If you are wearing nursing shoes that are not comfortable, your performance will show it. Therefore, ensure that your nursing shoes are very comfortable and do not create any discomfort. If your work involves moving around a lot, you will need to purchase a lightweight pair of shoes.
Apart from buying lightweight and comfortable nursing shoes, you can consider improving your overall comfort by buying compression socks. Such socks help in circulation and flow of blood, to minimize swelling that is normally observed on those who spend a lot of time on their feet.
Support and Stability
Since nurses work for long hours, it is extremely important to buy a shoe with good support and stability. This is important for both comfort and health reasons. The shoe you are eyeing, should provide excellent back and ankle support during your work routine to eliminate or reduce foot, back and leg pain. Failure to do so, might cause you to be faced with leg and back issues in future.
Factors like design and material, shape and height can have a great impact on how the shoe performs. Therefore, consider these factors carefully when buying nursing shoes. you can also experiment with a combination of different features to see the ones that fit your feet best. Supportive shoes are both comfortable and healthy.
Slip Resistance
It is obvious that slip resistance is the main factor, when it comes to purchasing nursing shoes. Nursing environments are characterized by liquids and spills, that can present you with slipping hazards. The shoe selected should offer good grip and slip resistance, to ensure that you are always safe throughout the day.
Design and Construction
Nursing shoes come in different styles, designs, and construction. Some of the most common shoes in the nursing field include clogs, crocs, athletic shoes, and tennis shoes. Each shoe has its own unique benefits and setbacks depending on the work surface, feet type, and medical condition.
If you are to choose between stylish nursing shoes that are not comfortable but look good, and basic looking shoes that keep your feet healthy and happy, go for the ones that keep your feet healthy. The quality of material is another key consideration. You don’t want to be going to the shop every now and then. Leather is one material known for durability.

- Rubber outsole provides traction and durability
Fila shoes entered the market many years ago. But in recent years, their popularity has tripled. They are especially popular in India. But the rest of the world, including the US, is just starting to get its toes wet when it comes to Fila. These shoes offer great quality at a small price. But that’s not the only reason they stand out from the crowd. They are made of 75% leather and 25% synthetic material. It’s a combination you don’t encounter often when browsing for nursing shoes on the Internet.
Like every shoe I’m putting in this list, this one has a super thick sole. You know why I’m showing you these shoes? Because nurses are some of the most important people we’ve got in this society, and if you’re a nurse and you’re reading this, then I want you to be wearing the most comfortable tennis shoes you can. Imagine that I’d ever end up in a hospital bed and you’re designated to take care of me. When you’re wearing these shoes, I’ll know for a fact that at least your footwear isn’t holding you back!
These are actually running shoes. But, you know… running shoes, tennis shoes. Pot-ay-to, pot-aa-to. Tom-ay-to, tom-aa-to. For the purpose of using them for being a nurse, it’s all good.
The leather upper is comfortable and is designed to give lots of lateral support. The midsole material is made of so called ethylene vinyl acetate. If this doesn’t mean anything to you, then you’re probably not a chemistry teacher. That’s okay, neither am I. Just remember that it’s a very cushiony material that’s going to make you feel like you’re floating on air with every step you take.
5. Reebok Women’s Royal Lumina Pace Classic Shoe
- Soft leather upper for supportive comfort
- IMEVA midsole provides cushioning
- Removable Memory Tech Sockliner for added comfort
- Beveled heel construction for enhanced walking...
Good old Reebok. You can always count on these guys to come up with excellent quality footwear at bottom low prices. The price tag on these shoes is a joke. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think they aren’t even worth your while. Nothing could be farther from the truth, since these get rave reviews from people who praise them for their quality and comfort. Reebok might increase the price if their popularity keeps soaring the way it is! If you don’t want to miss out on these, then this would be an opportune moment to snatch up a pair for yourself.
They’re made of leather, but come with thick rubber soles for making their owner (you?) stand comfortable and well supported, all day long. Their midsoles are injection molded EVA, or IMEVA. This is the same technology that New Balance uses a lot in their shoes as well. You will get more cushioning from an IMEVA midsole than you know how to handle. If you’re currently wearing trodden down sneakers with a quarter inch of sole left, then what are you waiting for? This is the support you need, right here.
They come with a memory tech sockliner, which is removable. So depending on how you like your Reebok Lumina Pace Classics to fit, you can either leave these in or take them out to create more space. More space means you’ll be able to wear them with thicker socks. This makes them suitable for colder environments, or when it’s fall or winter.
The beveled heel construction is there to improve your gait. Made for running athletes, these shoes are bound to give a nurse the support she needs while tending to her patients.
Best Tennis Shoes For Male Nurses - Reviews
1. Swiss Men’s Classic VN
- Tennis-style sneaker featuring metallic D-ring...
- Toe stripe overlays
You can say about K-Swiss whatever you like, but the fact of the matter is that their shoes definitely stand out in the crowd. Most of their footwear has a certain simplicity that captures the eye and refuses to let go. But not only do they stand out visually, they also provide really great support and comfort to the working man’s feet. So if you’re a male nurse looking for a good ‘tennis’ shoe, then you’ve probably come to the right place.
While this K-Swiss Classic VN wasn’t designed for the hospital, it definitely has that hospital charisma going on… in a good way. K-Swiss markets them as an American tennis style sneaker. Mind the ‘style’. It’s not an actual tennis shoe, it just sorta kinda looks like one. It’s kind of a style sneaker, but one that provides good comfort as well as support. The metallic D-rings give it that extra little bit of “Hey look at me, I’m quality footwear!”. It’s got overlay toe stripes and an embroidered logo on the tongue. This really completes the picture.
They are mostly true to size, for most people. Some have stated that, in the beginning, the fit was a tad bit on the tight side. However, after a week of wearing them daily… they will have stretched to fit your feet comfortable. They can squeak a little. But with enough ambience noise in the background going on at work, you are unlikely to really notice this.
It’s really hard to find all white shoes nowadays, but I do believe that K-Swiss has nailed the look with these Classic VNs.

The Asics Gel Dedicate 5 is designed for outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for are looking for a lightweight and comfortable pair of shoes. And if you are a nurse, then you should invest in these shoes. If you stand for long periods without wearing the right type of shoes, then you are at risk of developing ankle, knees and back pain. However, as long as you are wearing the Asics Gel Dedicate 5, then you don’t have to worry about such problems. These shoes come with adequate support and cushioning, which help to keep your feet happy the entire day.
These shoes are comfortable straight out of the box. Even if you don’t break them in, you will not end up with blisters or hot spots. They fit well, and they leave enough room for your toes. The Asics Gel Dedicate 5 comes with synthetic uppers, which are highly flexible to allow a wide range of motion. On the other hand, the forefoot GEL cushioning system absorbs impact while ensuring dispersion of body weight. Also, these nursing shoes for men feature the exclusive Trusstic system technology that significantly reduces the weight of the sole unit without lowering the structural integrity. As a result, you end up with a lightweight but supportive pair of shoes.
3. New Balance Men’s MC806 Stability Tennis Shoe
New Balance strikes again with this totally solid tennis shoe that’s going to make you feel like the next Rafael Nadal at the hospital where you are working as a nurse. If you’re a fan of New Balance, you’ll know they’re a big fan of their own ABZORB cushiong technology. Well, guess what? They also put it in these babies! New Balance hardly ever disappoints. The same can be said for these stylish, yet highly functional shoes.
This lace up tennis shoe is not only easy to take on and off, but also easy to wear. The comfort you’ll get from a sole like this is out of this world. While a lot of NB shoes have EVA (or IMEVA) soles, these actually have a C-CAP midsole. The outsole is still rubber, just like most other sporty shoes on today’s market. The C-CAP midsole is said by NB to be extremely durable and much lighter than most other midsoles.
For a few people, this NB Stability shoe runs a little too small. Although by far the most people are of the opinion that the fit was true to size. As an added bonus these are really great nursing shoes for wide and narrow feet. Both widths are (at the time of writing) available in the sizing. A lot of shoes have fewer sizing options than these ones do. So if you usually have problems finding footwear that fits well on your wide or narrow feet, then you’re in luck because New Balance comes to the rescue with their Stability tennis shoe!
4. adidas Performance Men’s Barricade Club Tennis Shoes
Good old Adidas strikes again with its Barricade Club shoe. They actual tennis shoes, which should make them a good fit for a nurse running around the hospital from one room to the next. They have non marking outsoles, so take those turns as swiftly as you possibly can without having to worry about making a mess of the hospital hall floors. These are imported from Vietnam, which is probably the reason why they are on offer for such a decently low price.
Some buyers have mentioned that they were a little too big. Others have complained that they are a little too small. However, all are in agreement that these shoes have the tendency to stretch a little over the span of about a week or so. You could very well order these (half) a size smaller, in order to get the best fit out of them with continued wear. Their insole is removable, which makes your life a whole lot easier, should you ever want to customize their support. Speaking of support… these Barricade Clubs provide really great support to the ankles.
Most buyers buy tennis shoes because they want to play tennis in them. Many of those buyers love the shoes so much that they also wear them outside of the court. I think this pretty much says it all. The comfort these shoes offer is good enough for tennis players. So that makes it good enough for nurses who stand up and walk around at work in a hospital all day long.
5. Prince Men’s T22 Mid Tennis Shoe
- 4Foot Wrap
- Shock Eraser cushioning
- wYshbone shank improves lateral and medial...
- PRC1000 rubber compound provides the highest level...
- RASH toe cap provides added abrasion protection...
Most of the time when you mention ‘Prince’, people will think of that one artist who was formerly named as such. And, to be honest, ‘Prince the musician’ was here before there was ‘Prince the tennis shoe’. But the latter has been around since 1970 already. It’s an underrated brand, for sure. Maybe they should’ve chosen a different brand name. I don’t konw what it is about Prince that makes people buy mostly other brands. But this particular pair of shoes receives raving reviews and comes at a very decent price. No reason to skip them, I’d say.
They made of synthetic material and mesh. There’s lots of mesh in these babies. It’s like, Mesh Central or something. That means high breathability, and that means comfort, even when it’s hot. With the T22 model number, you’d think we were talking about a terminator. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Although these shoes are definitely just as solid as a robot sent from the future to destroy you. You see, they have a wYshbone shank in them, which gives you really great medial and lateral stability.
They are collared for great ankle support. Their PU sockliner is removable. They have a thick, rubber sole that is made of the PRC1000 compound. It’s specifically designed to give you some really great durability, as well as traction. The Shock Eraser cushioning will make it so that you’ll feel like you’re hovering around the hospital hall floors, as you go about your day of walking around to nurse all your patients back to health.
Why Nurse Shoes?
(old content, left here for future refactoring into the newer content higher up on this page)
There is no one out there who needs a high-quality, comfortable pair of shoes more than a nurse. Imagine working long shifts back-to-back while wearing shoes that are too narrow or shorter than you need. By the end of your shift, your feet will be screaming in agony. Unfortunately, many nurses suffer from issues like back pain, numbness and shin splints due to wearing shoes that do not fit well and/or were not very well made.
The main thing you need when buying nursing shoes is comfort. The feet need to be well-cushioned while the hips, back, ankles and knees are all given the proper amount of support. The good thing is that I am here to inform you about all of the available options when it comes to stylish, well-made, comfortable medical shoes. Being a nurse if hard enough as it is. You are responsible for helping during traumatic times, consoling upset patients, meeting doctor's neverending demands and dealing with a bunch of co-workers with different personalities. Get rid of some of your work problems by purchasing a pair of nursing clogs that are totally comfortable, pain-free and fit you like a glove.
How Do Nursing Shoes Differ From Others?
While many people falsely believe that nursing shoes are basically a great pair of running or walking shoes, there is far more to it than that. There are certain factors that set them apart from all of the other shoes that are available on the market.
First of all, they are designed to be far more lightweight than the average shoe. This makes it easier to walk around for endless hours since you will not have to worry about the additional weight of a heavy shoe. This can make a huge difference when it comes to how you feel at the end of a long day. The material that medical clogs for nursing staff are made from helps protect them from spills and many other types of damage. There are grips made into the soles that help keep the foot stable even when you are walking across shiny, slippery tiles. Additionally, the soles of the shoe are designed to decrease the amount of stress around the spine and knees. Lastly, most hospital shoes do not have any laces or ties; they are meant to be slipped on.
Why Is Wearing A Really Great Shoe Important For Nurses?
Nurses should always select shoes that are safe and comfortable while keeping up a professional appearance. Some nurses are okay with wearing basic tennis shoes, but in most cases, nurses are willing to try several different kinds of shoes before settling on one that they feel offers them the most benefit. The best shoe will differ depending on the wearer. Experimenting is essential since one style and brand may be great for someone who has very small feet, while someone with a larger foot will have a better experience with something else.
Nurses know that it is essential for their shoes to look good while offering them safety when they are walking on slippery surfaces. Laugh at this all you want, but wet floors are a very real occupational hazard. While some jobs allow you to spend 50% or more of your time seated, this is not the case with nurses. They generally spend the majority of their shifts on foot. Furthermore, their shifts usually last at least 12 hours and it is common for them to work double or triple shifts.
Remember the fact that some nursing schools you attend will require you to purchase a specific style and brand of shoe for class. While some schools will give you a few options to choose from, others are very specific about the shoes you have to buy.
Things To Look For When Purchasing Nursing Shoes
(old content, left here for future refactoring into the newer content higher up on this page)
Buying shoes for working long hours in a hospital, is not the same as heading out and selecting a cute pair of sandals. It often takes a great deal of time, preparation and energy to choose a great nursing shoe. Make sure that you cover all of the bases when you are on your quest for the perfect shoe.
Size And Comfort
This is the most important factor. You should always measure your feet after walking around all day if you want to figure out the most accurate shoe size. Keep in mind that feet can become swollen. Never buy shoes that are smaller than you need since it is not necessary for you to break in medical clogs.
Arch Support And Comfort
People have different sized arches on their feet. Some shoes were created for people who have a very high or low arch. Make sure that you pay close attention when buying shoes so you do not buy the wrong type. Ask someone you know who runs often to let you know what shoes are best for their arch length and height.
Upper Material Quality
The upper part of your shoes should be made from a material that is simple to clean and very durable. While leather and suede look great, if you spill something on these materials, it could turn into a very large problem.
Sole Grip Material
The soles of the shoes you select should be made from a durable material that has a firm grip and is easy to clean. Rubber is one of the best choices when it comes to nurses walking across tile flooring. Make sure that any shoe you buy has great traction.
Color And Style
Finally, if you have narrowed it down to two shoes based on all of the factors that were mentioned above, you can make your decision based on color and style. Many nurses prefer black shoes since they will not show any marks as easily as shoes that are white. With that said, all white shoes are not prone to stains, you will have to look at the upper material and use it to make a determination. While nursing shoes are often selected because they offer a clean, stark look. You should also consider how difficult it is for you to slide your shoes on and off. Some nurses prefer a snug fit, but others like the idea of having extra space and a shoe that is easier to slide on.
How To Find Nursing Shoes That Will Fit Your Needs
It is important to be thoughtful when it comes to having the right shoes as a nurse. It is vital that you always measure your feet before going shopping, as this will give you an accurate measurement of the size and shape of your foot. You need to do this when you have just completed a full day at work, as you will get a better idea of what you need, and your feet will be in the state that they will endure when wearing the new shoes. Know which type of arch you have as well. It is key that you have enough support in the arch area. Those without this arch support could lead to sore ankles, knees and hips.
Next, think about your current role as a nurse as this can alter your needs. For instance, if your role is in an area of a hospital which is prone to spills, you may get stains on your shoes. As such, aim to find some stain-proof shoes or find a pair with a darker color. Some nurses who work with children prefer to have bright shoes to entertain the children.
Are Nursing Shoes For Women Different From Men's?
While the majority of people in the nursing world are female, there are also lots of men who are nurses and enjoy the job. With that being said, as the majority are women in the field, the best shoes for nurses are really aimed at women. Women's and men's nursing shoes are alike in some ways, but there are some major difference too. Before buying any shoes, be sure to remember this fact if you are a man, as buying shoes designed for a woman will simply just cause pain to your feet.
Shoes made for women are different as they are usually narrower and smaller. Meanwhile, men's nursing clogs will be wider and larger. Women's nursing clogs will usually have extra details around the edges. For example, there may be some flowers or patterns on nursing shoes for women. Men's shoes will just be very basic, without any extra decoration, and they come in black, brown and white.
It should be known that there are major differences in men’s and women’s feet. It is clear that men have broader and longer feet than women, but there are other differences too. One thing to note is how the ball of the foot, arch, and big toes are very different in men and women. You see, women usually have higher arches than men.
The Q-Angle is something else that is different in the sexes. The Q-Angle is the angle of the kneecap when measured up to the quad muscle. As men posses narrower hips, it follows that they have narrow Q-angles as well. Due to this, the way women stand is different and they need to have more support in the shoes to deal with this factor. Men can wear shoes with thinner, less-supportive soles, and some of the best shoes for men are those with a flat sole, based on the nature of the male foot. The best shoes for women will be those that offer much more support around the base of the foot.
Where To Buy Nursing Shoes
There are many places to find nurses shoes. Of course, you need to know your own size and foot shape before you go shopping. You also need to know which style you like and the design that would be best for your feet. There are now some department stores that stock medical types of footwear, but you may have to look online as well. If you are shopping in person, then you need to find a place that has a lot to choose from. This will help to ensure that you get what you need, by trying on many different styles and types first. As noted, you can also use Amazon as there are dozens to choose from. There is a great review system which will help you to find people like you, and get their experiences before buying. It is best to know what other nurses have thought about the shoes before you buy them. As you will be wearing them for such a long time, it is good to know what other nurses decided about them.

The best shoes for plantar fasciitis are AWP Recovery shoes in my opinion.
What is the name of the light blue mesh wedge shoe with white soles please.
Hi Chris,
They are apparently called “Sepatu Kets M Jala Toska” and I have found them available on a number of Indonesian webshops. Here’s one.

Brian
I am looking for a good shoe for support and cushion. I am a rather large male nurse 6’4”, weigh 270lbs, and wear a size 12-12.5 depending on the weigh it is cut. I have tried Asics and Brooks. The gts 17 and the revel have been the best but after about a month or two, I find myself looking for insoles due to heal, arch, and leg pain. Any help appreciated.
Hi Billy,
By the sound of it, you are an excellent candidate for Tread Labs insoles.
They have given me the best support I’ve ever had. They never wear out, as they are pretty tough.
Try them. You will not regret it.
Sincerely,
Brian
Any suggestions for someone with fallen arches (flat feet)? I’m on my feet quite a bit at work, and by noon my feet are quite sore. It’s an indoor job, and looking for mens shoes by the way.
Hi Samuel,
I’d have a look at my standing shoes page if I were you.
Let me know if you need more help.
Sincerely,
Brian
Hi Brian, I am a woman with size 12 feet and have plantar fasciitis now. Do you have suggestions for me? I am a nurse and my left foot has been absolutely killing me.
Hi Kathleen,
I’d probably go with a Dansko, because those are nice and roomy and will go easy on your feet. Some of them are available in your size.
As for the PF, you’re going to require good support as part of your treatment. That’s why I always recommend Tread Labs insoles. I’ve reviewed them here.
I hope this helps. If you want more advice, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Brian

Many please to find.
Many please.
Many thanks for pointing out that grammar error.
It’s so silly, it should be turned into a meme.
Would you?

Hi Denelle,
How about these SensFoot clogs?
They’re for chefs, but you sound to me like you could put’em to good use, too.
From your name I can’t be sure whether you are male or female, but these clogs are unisex!

Hi Brian,
I must say I absolutely love your article, I’ve sent it across to my aunty Annie who’s a Nurse in Dayton Ohio. During this trying time of the Covid 19 pandemic they have been extremely overworked. Comfort and stability is something they all need, more so now. Brilliant article thanks, its a real help….
Hi Senshoeality,
As a species, we’d do well to show more appreciation for our nurses. Without them, who will take care of us when we aren’t feeling well?
Let me know what your aunt Annie thinks about my reviews. I hope she’s got good footwear to stand comfortably on!
Sincerely,
Brian
Hi Brian, thank you for your very comprehensive article. My granddaughter will start her clinical trial soon and will be looking for nursing shoes. She has knock knees. Does she need special orthopedic nursing shoes to,preven future problems with spine and knees? Thank you.
Hi Cecilia,
Your granddaughter is going to need shoes with moderate to high stability. It helps to have a rigid insole in there. I like to wear Tread Labs, myself.
These are very rigid, since they are essently a hard bit of plastic. The upside to this, is that they truly never wear out.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you and your granddaughter.
Sincerely,
Brian
