Top Rated Men’s Hiking Boots Reviews In 2019
1. Timberland Men's White Ledge Mid Waterproof Ankle Boot
There are specific factors and design features that I look for when choosing the ideal boot for my needs. In particular, my opinion is that the Timberland brand makes some of the most durable and exciting boots for men. More so, the Timberland brand is a multi-national entity, and their boots often let you take on the outdoors with style and functionality. A great example, in my opinion, would be the Timberland Men’s White Ledge Boot.
Taking on the outdoors has become much more exciting since I got myself a pair of these Timberland Boots. I really loved the rugged design with unique sole lugs, without causing any compromise on the comfort of the boot.
Features That Attracted Me to This Boot
While I was initially skeptical of the quality of the boot, I, later on, realized that it embodied the characteristics of my ideal boot. Rugged, appealing, comfortable and functional. All these are some of the values of a good boot, especially for an outdoor enthusiast like me. Broadly speaking, the boot averages at 12 ounces, and has a dimension of 5 x 5 x 0.7 inches. Consider these other unique features of these boots:
High-quality Leather Construction
The Timberland brand is famous for making boots with high-quality materials. The brand is close to 4 decades old and is regarded as a status symbol in most clothing industries today. More importantly, most of their leather is manufactured through a proprietary process that has been refined over the years. I found this to be the case with these Timberland Ledge Boots. The high-quality leather is not only appealing, but I also found it easy to clean as well- especially after spending hours on muddy trails.
Waterproof Full-Grain Materials
Perhaps the most important feature on these boots are the seam-sealed full-grain leather upper structures. Such a unique design does well to keep your feet dry and protected, especially when you move through wet or muddy conditions. Even more, I also loved that other sections of the boot such as the tongue and the collar are padded. This way, the boot offers more comfort, than the conventional boot design that you would come across on the market.
Breathable Footbed Wicks Away Moisture
Furthermore, the boots also come with a breathable footbed, that is removable. As such, removing the footbed is easy, especially when you want to clean your boot after hours of outdoors fun. The dual density EVA footbed is also perforated. The unique perforated footbed structure provides optimal circulations and also does well to wick away moisture. As such, your feet stay cool and dry for enhanced comfort.
Equipped with the B.S.FP System for Support and Traction
Similar to all the Timberland Flagship boot products, these best Timberland Men’s White Ledge boots for men come with the B.S.F.P system. The Brake, Support, Flex, and Propel (B.S.F.P) system provides optimal traction. I particularly loved the durable rubber outsole that contains lugs to improving your motion especially in regards to braking, accelerating and climbing. The boot has a unique groove positioning in the toe area, that responds to your natural stepping motion. This feature was perfect for me, especially since I often spend several hours hiking outdoors. Even more, a gusseted tongue does well to relieve lace pressure. The gusseted tongue also reduces the likelihood of debris getting into your boot.
The other striking feature of this boot relates to the high-quality insulation. To be specific, the boot contains specially insulated thermite material. The material does well to wick away moisture quickly, and it also provides sufficient waterproof benefits. More importantly, the insulation does well to regulate heat inside the boot, thereby making it ideal even for use in low temperatures.
- The boot has a high-quality leather construction
- I also loved the unique lugs for enhanced performance
- The gusseted tongue was highly effective for relieving pressure
- The padded interior was also amazing
- The boot only comes with one pair of laces
Finally- What You Can Expect From this Boot
Overall, the Timberland Men’s White Ledge is, in my opinion, a remarkable hiking boot for men. It is very comfortable, and the rugged design works well for outdoor escapades. I also loved the unique timberland design, that is synonymous with high-quality workmanship. This boot lets you take on the outdoors with both style and confidence. I never leave them behind, and my experiences outdoors have become much more exciting since I got myself a pair of these boots.

2. KEEN Men’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot
Hiking and other kinds of adventure tourism are highly demanding and tough sporting activities. It requires the right kind of boots and gear. Since hiking is about travelling long distances and perhaps covering hundreds of miles spread over a number of days, having the right hiking boot is important. There are literally dozens of such shoes and therefore choosing the right one could often pose quite the challenge. Many would-be footwear buyers, myself included, frequently suffer from indecision and confusion. But going by the many reviews that these boots have gotten on Amazon, I have quite a few reasons to believe that KEEN Men’s Targhee II Hiking Boot is a darn good purchase. Therefore, it would be interesting to have a closer look at these boots and what features you can expect from them.
It is made from high quality leather. Furthermore, I have found the rubber soles under these Targhee IIs are not only very comfortable but they also last a long period of time. They are available either as an imported hiker boot or they also are manufactured in the USA. The reason why I adore this shoe is that it is breathable and waterproof. It also comes with various other technological facilities like midsole made from quality EVA foam, outsole that is not marking, etc. Further the EVA foam foot bed is contoured and removable. The ESS shank also has the right stability torsion available in it. All these I have found to be extremely useful for me especially when I am in long hikes where the conditions are hostile and unhelpful to say the least.
A Few More Reasons Why I Have Chosen This
Put in plain and simple words, I can easily claim that these have been built for the best stability and comfort money can buy. If your feet sweat a lot, these KEENs will definately help a lot to keep them dry. The waterproof leather upper is also of the best quality. It is constructed in such a way that it does not allow permeation of water into the boot’s surface. They have been manufactured to be able to handle very long treks. I am impressed with the wonderful S3 support system. It has been very thoughtfully engineered and you can tell when wearing them. These support your foot with every impact you make. The S3 support system does a good job dispersing and dissipating shocks. This reduces your chance of twisting an ankle significantly.
This Mid Hiking Boot has a number of useful and customer friendly features which make it one of the best choices for those who are looking for a comfortable way of taking a long hike. The KEEN Targhee II is also famous for offering the best of comfort and stability. There are a few more reasons why you could consider this a great hiking boot. I am thoroughly impressed with the compression molded EVA midsole. This midsole offers the bottom of my feet a type of cushioning like I’ve never experienced before. It has a unique ESS shank which goes a long way in offering a guy really good torsional stability. I enjoy crisscrossing mountaintops and canyons, because it makes me feel like a free man. And with this goal in mind, these boots certainly go a long way.
A few more aspects are worth mentioning. Let’s have a look at the much talked about KEEN.Dry technique. This technology helps keep your feet dry from the first to the last step on your hiking trail. Furthermore, the leather upper is also made from a very special material which is breathable, waterproof and most importantly… a proprietary material that no other manufacturer has so far been able to copy.
The ESS Shank in particular provides 100% stability as far as torsion is concerned. Stable torsion will help you feel safer when climbing rocks, having to twist in order to make it up to the next one. Furthermore, these boots also come with a unique mid cut and I have found this very useful. It’s the best of both world when it comes to comfort and stability with regard to your ankles. These KEENs make trekking through canyons and mountaintops much safer than it normally would be. It also makes it much more comfortable and therefore stress free. The product weighs just 3 pounds which is quite comfortable when travelling and hiking long distances. The boot’s dimensions are 12 inches x 8 inches x 4 inches.
Customers Have Good Things To Say About It
By now, you’ll have realized that I am extremely pleased with KEEN’s Targhee II Hiking Boot, the fact that it has received so many positive customer reviews on Amazon, really hammers home the fact that this is some high quality stuff. Few boots receive such a high rating as this one. Many customers are happy about the firm grip. But also the waterproofing system, which is extremely efficient and reliable. The heels are also very comfortable and they make it so that you can put these on and fit in snugly. Many people also like the fact that these boots lace up really quickly.
A few customers have had an issue with these boots, because the boot’s threading started coming out from the bottom. But other than that that there aren’t a whole lot of negative aspects to mention about this men’shiking boot. Believe me, I’ve looked for downsides, but I ain’t finding’em! These boots offer darn good quality for the money. Best bang for your buck right here, guys.

3. Vasque Men’s Breeze 2.0 GTX Hiking Boot
The Vasque Breeze 2.0 GTX is a mid weight hiking boot. One of the finest around. It is designed to let you move fast over different trails and terrains, while at the same time offering maximum breathability. This shoe is very comfortable on your feet. Since it is very lightweight, it’s a great choice for backpacking afficionados, who don’t want to feel overburdened despite packing for multiple days on the trail.
As the name suggests, this hiking boot is built to be airy and light. If you are an adventurer who prefers the dry and warm seasons, you should opt for the non-waterproof version of this shoe. I particularly appreciated the breathability and nimbleness of this boot. It’s got a Gore-Tex waterproof and breathable membrane, and you can tell. Although it is more of a backpacking boot, the overall responsiveness and comfort make it feel more like an athletic shoe.
I was particularly impressed by the level of comfort of this boot. It breathes better than most other hiking boots that I have worn over the past few years. The combination mesh and upper leather is supple and wraps around your foot and ankle right after putting it on.
The dual-density insole is among the best you will find in the market today. Another plus for this shoe is the out of box comfort. After several days trailing, I was amazed at how comfortable the ankle collar and the tongue became.
The lacing system is fairly simple. You’ll be laced up on both feet within the minute. If you have a wider foot, it is advisable to go for the wider version of this boot, for added comfort.
Support And Stability
This Vasque Breeze 2.0 GTX boot is one of the most supportive and stable boot that I have worn during my hikes. Although it is designed to be mid-cut, the cuff rises well above the ankle, thus providing more foot control and protection to face those loose rocks on steep hikes.
There is also a stability plate made from thermoplastic urethane that provides the required midsole rigidity for exhausting and long hikes. Additionally, the shoe has a narrow heel box that locks down your instep, preventing slipping on steep hills. The flexible and lightweight upper is very comfortable. It also provides minimal lateral stability.
I have hiked with these boots on steep slopes and they offer very good support. I have never stubbed a toe even on those rocky areas since the toe area is well protected with the molded toe bumper. I have done landscaping with them and covered them in mud, yet my feet have always remained dry.
Construction And Quality
The burly and leather mesh upper is of high quality. There is also an added bonus of the metal lacing hooks. I particularly loved the durable and thick rubber heel and the toe bumpers that add durability and protection. A nubby and super aggressive outsole provides a firm grip even on muddy, slick areas. I also loved the thin reflective strip located on the back of the cuff.
All feet vary in their size as well as configuration. Therefore, it is not easy to find a shoe that fits everyone perfectly. Having said that, this shoe remains the best fitting I have ever worn. It is extremely snow proof and weatherproof.
I have even walked in snow that was a little higher than my ankle and there were no leakages inside the shoe. I wore them almost every day last winter and they performed exceptionally well. In terms of overall construction, it is well put together with good workmanship and high quality materials.
My size 12 shoe weighs only 2.90lbs. it is one of the lightest hiking boots you will ever find in the market today. The ample mesh panels that have been incorporated in the upper help this shoe to maintain low weight. It is important to note that despite the reduced weight, the shoe is still strong and sturdy, for hiking different terrains.
The Vasque Breeze 2.0 GTX boot, is one of the best boots that I have worn during hiking. It is more of a backpacking boot with an upper designed for a light hiker. The substantial midsole, the tall cuff, the Gore-Tex liner and stability plate make more of a backpacking boot. However, the overall responsiveness and comfort bring an athletic feel to this shoe. It is well suited for backpackers and hikers looking for the lightest footwear, but who still prefer an ankle collar with full coverage. It fits in between more stable midweights and super comfy lightweights.

4. Salomon Men’s Quest 4D GTX Backpacking Boot
With hiking and outdoor adventuring being my only hobby (read: lifestyle), I think I can count myself as an experienced backpacker. All my favorite hiking trails have steep and jagged slopes, and I want to climb them with a fair amount of weight in my backpack. I’m no dayhiker. I’m sure you’ll understand that I need a fantastic pair of boots on my feet for these undertakings.
For a long time, I have found it impossible to find boots that offer comfortable soles for long walks and sufficient ankle support to protect my ankles from injury in harsh terrain. Some of them are also not comfortable when I stay immobile for long hours, especially when standing around on rough terrain. I have bought many shoes over the past years, but many fail miserably on one or two of those things. It is even more challenging to get boots that fulfill all these without compromising the quality of something else. You certainly don’t want to a boot that is lacking in the waterproof department; this is a MUST!
I’ve bought plenty of sub par shoes and boots in the past, because I wanted to save some money. Big mistake. I only buy the good stuff now. You get what you pay for. These boots got a lot of raving reviews from a lot of enthusiastic Amazon customers. I have read many reviews about the Salomon Men’s Quest 4D GTX Backpacking Boot and decided to take the gamble. They aren’t cheap, but you will get bang for your buck. They are by far among the best value I have ever gotten for the money.
To be honest, I chose these Salomon based on the extremely high Amazon rating given to it by its wearers. When so many people give a product such rave reviews, it makes you wonder. Kind of makes you think that if you are a heavy-duty adventurer, who is looking for boots to explore a broad range of locales, these Salomon Quest 4D GTX boots are the way to go. Besides being elegant and streamlined, they are fully functional as protection against uneven ground, wet, cold and all other elements of nature you will encounter.
Salomon has been expanding its production line since 1947, the date this company was born in the French Alps. They started out as the pioneer of modern ski equipment but have presently grown to encompass their full passion for designing and distributing all products from apparel to footwear to skis. And pretty much every other mountain sports related accessory you can imagine. From my research, I have come to realize why the company takes pride in its innovative designs. Had it not been for their unique dedication to make their customers push their limits out in the mountains, I would have skipped their history entirely.
Their Men’s Quest 4D GTX Backpacking Boot is only a single outcome of this ongoing effort. They have incorporated a wide variety of features when making these boots, in order to make it a complete, high quality boot for the ages. These backpacking boots feature a compact, utilitarian design. This makes for an elegant product. With these, I have enjoyed the optimal experience on a number of strenuous hiking trails.
However, you can choose from the six color schemes available, pretty much all of them dark colored. The Salomon Quest 4D GTX has a stylized exterior design that uses quality material, making it waterproof and warm without being stifling. Its inner side features an OrthoLite footpad that not only absorbs shock but also repels odors and microbes, keeping my shoes always smelling good.
It may sound like I am contradicting myself when I say that these boots keep my feet warm in colder conditions and cool in hot weather. I’m not, though. It’s the truth. The interior of these boots contain the well-known Gore-Tex membrane. This compound repels any water near it while allowing any water vapor to escape. This prevents your foot from overheating. Furthermore, you can use the three pairs of lace hooks to adjust the boot’s fitting form just the way you need it. I also find it easy to pull it off or on quickly. When I’m coming home from a long hike, which is already exhausting enough as it is, I really don’t want to struggle for minutes on end to get out of my boots!
- I agree with the many customer ratings; it is true to size.
- Most customers who have bought it report a very short breaking-in period; so do I.
- I personally praise it for long lasting comfort.
- I’ve experienced that it takes the exteriors time to dry completely.
- Overall, these Salomon boots are among my favorite for backpacking and hiking, not so much for trail running.

5. Propet Men’s Cliff Walker Boot
That is by far one of my favorite’s quotes when I think about camping, so much so that I basically have converted it into my own personal mantra. I’m not normally one to write long boring or flavorful (sappy) reviews about how much I “adore” a product, but it’s different with this particular item.
I’m a super outdoorsy kind of man. I enjoy hiking and nature trails. OK..no! “Enjoy” is an understatement. It wouldn’t be a stretch of the truth for me to say that I was pretty much raised outdoors. Summers on the lake. Exploring the woods with friends, creeping away unsupervised, getting lost and learning how to adapt. Nostalgia (I’m sitting at my desk with a huge grin on my face).
Bear with me, I know I’m taking a bit longer to get to the meat of the matter here, but reminiscing on the adventures to be had in life is really getting my thoughts going.
So yes, I LIVE for the adrenaline rush, the fresh smells, the serene sounds (whether they be of the wind murmuring through the leaves or the gurgling of a creek), that unhinging feeling of freedom and the excitement of discovery. When it’s just you and the trail or just being outdoors, there’s not much, in my opinion, that can match or surpass that feeling.
So what does this all have to do with Propet Men’s Cliff Walker Boot you ask? Well let’s just say this, it doesn’t leave me wanting for more. This is the perfect boot for general outdoors activities, hiking, climbing, traversing through wet terrain, you name it! I’ve used quite a few different types of boots on my adventures, but to be honest, none have quite done it for me like this boot.
Just the fact alone that this boot has this flexible rubber outsole with its fresh, avant-garde ‘self-cleaning’ rubber outsole design allows it to stand out from the average boot. That particular self-cleaning design means that my steps are steady on all types of different terrain. That just brings me right back to that quote from before; not only do I get into my rhythm but with my trusted Propet boots, I can rest assured that my grip will be secure. Excellent traction. Furthermore, some key features are its D-ring (speed lacing closure) hook and loop lace system which lends for ease and speed in getting on your way and breathable nylon mesh lining. The Propet Cliff Walker Boot personifies its name to the max! This is a sturdy boot that is meant for hiking.
“Jumping from boulder to boulder and never falling, with a heavy pack, is easier than it sounds; you just can’t fall when you get into the rhythm of the dance.”
Don’t tell my girlfriend this but, I have a pair in Bronco Brown, but I recently ordered the Black and Brown Nubuck too. I can never have enough. (Wait what? I sound like one of those shoe fanatics!)
But seriously, if I’m on a particular trail that’s mucky, this boot is not only equipped with a self-cleaning tread, but also with a Sealtex waterproof technology. It covers my ankle and gives me maximum support for my feet. There is also a thick cushion throughout the shoe. Another awesome thing about this boot is that I can use it for everyday tasks in my backyard therefore making it more than just a rugged athletic boot.
It’s safe to say that, I really love these boots. So far they are warm and comfy and I’ve walked in all ranges of weather in them. One thing I will say though is that they could have insulated the boot. If you’re going to be out in the snow with them, there are certain things you should keep in mind. These pebbled leather boots aren’t insulated, so if you are going to go on short excursions, because they are waterproof, you can get away with wearing insulated socks. Thick wool socks will suffice. The boot is cut large enough to accommodate the wool socks too. However, if you plan to wear them in the snow for long periods at a time, don’t.
All in all, the Propet Men’s Cliff Walker Boot does not disappoint. It is sturdy, comfortable and versatile on various terrain types and waterproof to boot (pun intended!). They could have been insulated for maximum efficiency in snowy weather. But nonetheless, to say that these boots are worth their weight in salt, is the understatement of the century!

Since these boots are designed to be used in various hiking conditions, their upper is mainly made of polyurethane and leather. Apart from promoting breathability, polyurethane also protects the leather from scratches and water damage, thus making the boots last longer. The leather used has been treated with stain resistance and Omni-shield technology to keep your feet dry, especially when you come across wet conditions during your hike. You can hike through water puddles and the moisture or wetness will not reach your feet. The upper also features portions of mesh, which enhance breathability while reducing moisture inside. Apart from being waterproof, these shoes are also equipped with a firm shank beneath the arch. This shank supplies lateral support and stability. And as much as these boots are supportive and firm, they are flexible enough to give you the comfort that you need during your trek. Also, the sturdy upper construction will protect your feet against trail debris. The 5-inch shaft supplies additional protection. As long as you have these boots on your feet, then you don’t have to worry about anything happening to your feet. And if you will not be hiking, you can still use these boots for shoveling your driveway during winter.
Whether you are hiking on soft dirt terrains or your journey takes you through wet, slippery boulders, these hiking shoes for men will take you there with utmost comfort and confidence. 7. Dunham by New Balance Men’s Cloud Mid-Cut Waterproof Boot
The Dunham by New Balance Men’s Cloud Mid-Cut Waterproof Boot is a high-quality product that is guaranteed to make your weekend hike comfortable. The boots have great traction and are waterproof. They are also slip-resistant and are quite comfortable. These Dunhams are one of the most comfortable and cost effective boots that are currently available.
The Dunham by New Balance Waterproof boot are the most comfortable hiking boots I have ever worn. The boots have a rubber toe cap. The toe caps ensure that I wear them for hours on end quite comfortably. The Dunham boots have an innovative EVA midsole that absorbs shock as I walk over diverse hiking terrain. The midsole has a fibreglass stability shank which ensures that I have a smoother gait by supporting my foot arch.
Dunham’s backpacking boots also have dual density ABZORB inner sole that is lined with mesh and is removable. The fact that the inner sole can be removed makes it easy for me to clean the inside. The best part about it is the dual density inner sole also provides shock absorption. To crown it all up, the boots have a memory foam foot bed which enhances the level of comfort experienced when wearing the boot. I can say for a fact that these are among the most comfortable hiking boots that are currently available on the market. Well, at least in my humble opinion.
My ankles have ample support in the form of a mid-cut collar design. I have a lot of faith in my stability as I confidently go on hikes. The Dunham by New Balance hiking boots have superior rear foot stability that is provided by its integral Graphite Rollbar technology.
One thing that I particularly like about these boots is that they are waterproof. I went hiking with a couple of friends and we encountered some heavy downpour in the afternoon. I stumbled and landed in a large puddle of muddy water. As I manoeuvered my way out, my friends burst out and laughed as I clumsily plodded out of the puddle. Their smiles turned to awe and amazement when they realized my socks and feet were as dry as a bone. The boots have waterproof Nubuck leather uppers. They have a gusseted tongue design that helps the boots keep water and any debris out.
I have owned many different pairs of backpacking boots in the last year alone. So far, none of these pairs has traction like this Dunham by New Balance pair. Maximum traction is provided by the TRU-TRAK rubber outer sole which is multi-directional. I studied the boot’s rubber sole just the other day and I could not help but admire the aggressive tread pattern. I guess that’s why my Dunham boots have great traction and grip capabilities. Currently, I can hike over diverse terrain, no matter how slippery, without a care in the world.
The Dunham hiking boots have Nubuck leather material on its upper design. The leather is of the highest quality and is tough enough to withstand vigorous hikes. Its upper section is constructed from full grain leather and this ensures it is durable and lives up to its expectations. Its lace closure mechanism is adjustable to ensure it can accommodate wide feet. I can imagine that wide footed people would really appreciate these boots because of that fact.

These Dunham by New Balance Cloud mid cut, waterproof backpacking boots have dimensions of 14 X 5 X 5(L X W X H) inches. They have a shaft height of 4.5 inches. I find the boots relatively lightweight as they weigh 1.6 ounces.

- Great traction.
- Shock absorbing features.

- Durable and robust.
- Stitching can come apart with time.
These high quality Dunham by New Balance boots are available at a very affordable price. The price difference depends on the size of hiking boot available. Generally speaking, the bigger the shoe size, the more expensive it will be. But still very affordable.
Hundreds of people have given these boots very good reviews on Amazon. Hundreds of people can’t be wrong. And, indeed, they aren’t!
The Dunham by New Balance Men’s Cloud Mid-Cut Waterproof Boot is a high-quality hiking boot that is robust and durable. They are quite comfortable and waterproof. They are definitely some of the best I have owned so far and they provide great value for the money. I highly recommend this Dunham by New Balance footwear to my fellow hiking afficionados.

Boot Bomb Rating:
8. Merrell Men’s Moab Mid Gore-Tex Hiking Boot
These Merrels right here are among the lightest boots a hiker can wear. The Merrell Moab Ventilator Mid- Gore Tex Hiking boots are extremely breathable, too. Both on hot and dry trails, these boots keep your feet dry and cool. Even when pass through water, they will drain and dry much more quickly than most other hiking boots.
The Merrell Moabs are available in both regular as well as wide sizes. They are lightweight boots, that feel comfortable from the first step you take in them. The upper part of the boot, cradles the foot with its softness. It has alternating leather strips, as well as breathable mesh segments. New hikers might have a short breaking in period. However, experienced hikers with strong, trail-hardened feet will certainly feel comfortable in these Merrells for a long time to come.
The insoles of these boots are soft and flexible. They are also removable, so that you can replace them with a pair of insoles of your own choosing. The outsoles are more like the outsoles of sneakers than those of hiking boots. This helps a great deal in providing comfort to a hiking man. The boots are durable for most terrains, just so long as you stay on the trail and you don’t bushwack your way across rougher parts.
The inner surface of the upper is covered with a water proof Gore-Tex membrane. When you are hiking through wet grass, or worse, snow, the inner part of the boot remains completely dry. However, when you step into a deep puddle or a stream, some fluid is bound to seep in, but they will dry out very quickly.
They have a breaking in period, mind you. However, every time you wear them you will notice a reduction in sweaty feet and blisters. These Merrell Moabs have very spiffy mesh panels on the side. They look great, but they also have one minor downside. When you step into mud and the mud dries, it tends to gunk up the mesh panels. This not only degrades the extremely stylish look of these boots, but it also hampers the ventilation. You don’t have these issues with, say, pure leather boots. The mud can be hard to remove. You can get most if it by wiping your finger along. But you won’t be able to get it all, unless you take the boot off and wash it with a wet cloth. In short: a minor bit of maintenance with these boots is required.
Usually black caps tend to protect the wearer’s toes as well as his heel. The caps in these boots are made from rubber, and they will probably start fraying after a couple of years. The cap works pretty decently to protect your heels and toes. Stub your boots hard enough against a rock, and you’ll still stub your toe. Doing this many times over a day will add up. Furthermore, the soles are made of highly textured grey and black Vibram rubber. The Vibram sole allows you to get a good grip of the trail. You can be hopping stones and boulders with confidence all day long.
The boots are laced by 12 nylon ribbon loops. One is located at the bottom. There are five on each side. And then there is one at the top at the center of tongue. Also, there is a pair of copper lacing hooks on top of the boots.
For some, the ankle collar might be too short in comparison to other hiking boots. So for some, the ankle support will not be adequate. On the upside, these Merrell Moab have a wide forefoot, which serves as a very stable platform for smooth terrain, where you don’t encounter lots of rocks, roots and other stuff. Hikers that have trail hardened feet will probably love this boot, not just because of its generally decent support and stability, but also because of the fact that it is very lightweight.
Provided that you use these boots in dry climates (rather than wet ones) and mostly on the trail (rather than off the trail), you are going to be hugely satisfied with these Merrells.
I’ve been doing some research into lightweight boots recently, taking into account many customer reviews on many different sites. I found one guy who said that this is the second lightest hiking boot after The North Face Ultra Fastpack Mid GTX. For both hikers and ultra light back packers alike, who love lightweight footwear, the Merrell Moabs are bound to be one of the best hiking boots for the money.
For some customers who have reviewed these boots, the seams became unstitched after a few months. Some complain that the Merrell Moab Gore Tex boots could have had better durability. However, the light weight of these Merrells, in combination with their relatively low price, still make for an excellent purchase. For one reviewer, applying Seam Grip Repair Adhesive to these boots, have increased the life expectancy of the boot’s uppers.
- They are very lightweight.
- You’ll feel comfortable wearing them.
- The boots have good ventilation.
- They are water resistant.
- They dry out easily when they get wet.
- For some, the ankle support is inadequate with backpack loads above 35 lbs (20kg). Also while walking across inclines.
- The stock insoles offer insufficient arch support for flat feeted people. You’ll have to replace these.
- Mud usually clogs up the mesh. It can only be completely removed by soaking the boot.
- These boots may not be best for extreme cold weathers.
These shoes are very well ventilated and they are very lightweight. They will provide you with adequate ankle support just so long as you aren’t packing to heavily. Think of a maximum of 25 lbs (12 kg). But their limit is pushed with heavier packs. Even though the boots have mesh panels, they are still pretty waterproof to morning dew, rain, and even little bits of snow. When stepping into a stream the boots will soak. Thankfully, these boots have great ventilation, making them dry easily.

9. Hi-Tec Men’s Altitude V I Waterproof Hiking Boot
Just like any other extracurricular activity, hiking requires ample preparation. You don’t want to be on a hiking expedition and all of a sudden you realize that what you have is typically the opposite of what you get. In hiking, your best weapon and perhaps your only way to achieving a successful hike is by getting the best hiking boots. I have seen a good number of hikers showing up in light, sporty shoes ready to tackle a rough terrain. The results are predictable… such hikers come down with totally worn out shoes and blistered feet. I believe most people are perfectly capable of learning from others’ mistakes. You probably don’t want to go through the same thing. So what are you going to do? The answer is simple. Get a couple of damn good, high quality hiking boots. If I were you, I wouldn’t look further than the Hi-Tec Men’s Altitude V I Waterproof Hiking Boot.
As the name suggests, this hiking boot is no doubt the best choice when it comes to trekking along tough and rough high altitude terrains. I’m going to share with you some valuable information I have gathered from some of my friends who use these boots as well as my detailed research on the same boots.
From what I have gathered, this boot comes equipped with Dri-Tec waterproof technology. This type of technology is pretty uncommon, and only a few boots are lucky enough to have it. Apart from the Dri-Tech waterproof technology, this boot comes equipped with a waterproof bootie construction, and a pure grain of leather that covers the upper part of the entire boot. Whether you come across a river or rains pounds on you, this boot has got you completely covered.
I know we come across Hi-Tech phones, Hi-Tech Television sets and so on and so forth. But have you ever heard or come across a Hi-Tec boot? If not, then you have now, with this hiking boot. This Hi-Tech boot has been assembled using the latest hydrophobic technology known as the I-Shield technology. What this simply means is that, when it rains or when you come across a wet field or terrain, this boot has the power to repel away the water. With this boot, the days when you used to go hiking and come back with wet socks are gone and forgotten.
Since 1978, Hi-Tec has been known to produce lightweight boots to make the hiking experience more enjoyable. With this boot, you don’t have to be worried about the weight of its big back heel sole or its big physical appearance thanks to the presence of the V-Lite technology. V-Lite has been known to reduce the overall weight of the boot. With this in mind, you can run, jog and walk comfortably with this boot.
Hiking is made possible by comfort. If you happen to wear poorly cushioned boots, trust me, you are going to have a not so friendly hiking experience. However, with these Hi-Tech Men’s Altitude V I boots, the comfort and pampering of your feet is guaranteed thanks to the presence of an ortholite cushioned sock liner. This sock liner not only does it enhance comfort; it also protects your feet from warm temperatures, thereby preventing a nasty case of smelly feet.
When some hiking boots are exposed to water or any other type of corrosive fluids, they tend to form rust, especially on the shoestring metal eyelets. However, from what I have gathered from countless hikers, this is not the case with these Hi-Tec Altitude V I men’s boots. I can easily attribute this to the fact that, these boots come with complete rustproof shoestring eyelets. You no longer need a lubricant to hide the rusty brown patches on your boots.
Though hiking comes with a lot of adventures, challenges are part of the expedition too. At times, you have to go through tough terrains with steep mountains and rugged rocks. This type of trekking requires a boot that can easily absorb shock and pressure with the greatest of ease. With this boot, you don’t have to be worried about rough rocks and rugged slopes thanks to a midsole made from EVA material. This material absorbs shock and impact hence keeping your feet protected from injuries or strains. The outer rubber outsole also provides maximum traction and promotes flexibility to your entire body in general.
From what we have gathered, it’s no surprise that this boot ranks among the best in the market today, when you consider its diversity, flexibility and comfort. If you don’t have this hiking boot from Hi-Tec, please make sure you hit the store as soon as possible before you hit the road for your next outdoor expedition.

10. Ariat Men’s Terrain H2O Hiking Boot
Through the many times I have been on hiking trips I have come to learn that it is always paramount to ensure everything is in place prior to starting a hiking trip. This means it is always advisable to use the right hiking amenities. This includes both clothing as well as footwear. One of the most important aspects while hiking is using the right boots. Boots capable of handling different terrains. I have been comparing many different types of footwear in the past few months. I’ve compared many excellent ones. In the endless barrage of hiking boots that I’ve tested, I also came across the Ariat’s Men’s Terrain H2O.
The primary reasons that attracted me to these particular boots include its features, which make these boots perfect for hiking on different terrains. These boots reach up to the ankles. The shaft is approximately five inches up from the arch. As a result they protect the foot and ankle properly. Their upper body is made using waterproof, oiled, full grain leather which makes them very durable. And it also gives them the ability to withstand mother nature’s elements, which any decent hiking trail is bound to throw at you. This leather being oiled means that they are water proof. They can be used even in very wet conditions, without the water getting inside and giving you wet feet.
To enhance comfort for its wearers, but also to increase toughness to deal with even the roughest of terrains, these boots have synthetic soles. The soles are so light that you will not feel like you’ve got extra weight dragging you down. They are extremely comfortable for moving aroundin. Despite being light, the soles are tough. No worries about sharp objects penetrating these babies. They will provide you with optimal protection. These Ariat H2O hiking boots have EVA midsoles and DuratreadTM outsoles. This makes the soles tough yet flexible. As any experienced hiker will know, this is a great thing to have when taking on the more strenuous trails.
On the inside, the Ariat Men’s Terrain H2O Hiking Boots have a moisture wicking lining that keeps them dry at all times. This is especially important while wearing the boots during the hot seasons, or when wearing them for long hours. Because at these times, one is usually more prone to sweating. At the front area they have a round toe profile which ensures the toes have ample space. Therefore, they can be worn for long hours without discomfort. The comfort is further enhanced by that the interior is made using tough, yet soft materials. The ATS advanced torque stability technology, which comes with composite forked shank, makes these boots optimally comfortable and tough.
One of the main benefits is the modern technology which was obviously used in the manufacturing of these Ariat Terrain H2O men’s backpacking boots. This technology has been carefully used to ensure the boots provide maximum comfort and convenience for anyone who might need a tough but light hiking boot. Being waterproof is another benefit since wearers do not have to carry different pairs of boots with them in case one pair gets wet. Their lightness is also a big advantage, especially when going for long walks. You can walk on these babies for a whole day without experiencing unnecessary exhaustion or discomfort. The fact that their shaft is about five inches, measured from the arch, also ensures that they provide maximum ankle protection.
Despite the many benefits of these particular boots, I still came across a number of issues which people who had used these boots were complaining about. One of these things include that the pull on loop at the back is annoying to some people because it prevents your pants from going all the way down. There were also complaints that the soles are stiffer than in the previous version, giving them a bit longer of a breaking in period.
Keep in mind that these boots were especially made for hiking in different terrains. Their modern design makes them some of the most stylish, yet convenient footwear. Despite the few issues that customers have come across here and there, I conclude that the Ariat Men’s Terrain H2O Hiking Boots are ideal for people who love hiking strenuous trails comfortably.

11. adidas Outdoor Men's CW Pathmaker Hiking Boot
The Adidas Outdoor Pathmaker is designed to deliver an unmatched hiking performance. These winter hiking boots for men are durable, lightweight and remarkably comfortable. They will keep your feet warm and safe so that you can focus on your hike. In addition, they feature the exclusive Adidas Boost technology, which provides energy return with every step. Therefore, the more energy you expend, the more the shoes give you back. At the end of the day, your legs will only be experiencing minimal fatigue. If you have an upcoming hike, and there is a possibility of encountering wet or cold conditions, then the Adidas ClimaWarm Pathmaker is a perfect hiking partner. Let’s have a look at some of its features in depth.
Solid Upper Construction
Shoes encounter a lot of abuse, especially during an extended hike. If your shoes are not properly built, they might fall apart in the middle of your hike, thus exposing your feet to numerous hazards along the way such as rocks, thorns and other materials. However, as long as you are wearing the Adidas CW Pathmaker, you will never have to worry about such problems. They come with a sturdy upper construction, which ensures that your feet have adequate protection. In addition, the synthetic material used on the upper is lightweight, thus keeping you light on your feet. The lacing system extends all the way to the ankles to give you a secure and customized fit. On the other hand, the use of the proprietary Climawarm technology ensures your feet remain dry and warm even when the conditions are extremely wet. On the other hand, the PrimaLoft insulation material ensures your feet are warm – a feature that makes them great hiking boots for winter. If you are looking for hiking boots with ankle support, then you don’t need to go any further. These boots are fitted with a cushioned tongue and collar, which protects your ankles to prevent twists.
Just like the upper, the midsole unit of this pair of shoes, is designed to supply comfort, support, and stability. They are fitted with a lightweight EVA midsole, which supplies long-term cushioning, as well as shock absorption. Whenever your foot strikes the ground, the EVA cushioning will ensure that the impact is not transferred to your ankles, back or knees. Also, these boots are equipped with an EVA heel frame, which supplies lateral stability. They are also fitted with a textile lining to prevent blisters, hot spots, and other discomforts. Furthermore, these men’s hiking boots feature lateral and media support, which provides additional stability. Therefore, even if you are hiking on uneven terrain, your feet will have enough support. As noted earlier, these Adidas hiking boots also feature the exclusive Boost technology. Mainly used in running shoes from this brand, Boost technology provides energy return, therefore minimizing foot fatigue.
Grippy Rubber Outsole
The Adidas CW Pathmaker is one of the best hiking boots for wet and slippery conditions. It features a grippy rubber outsole, made of continental rubber. Therefore, whether you are hiking on muddy trails, or you come across loose gravel, you can walk with confidence knowing that these boots will keep your feet firm on the ground. Also, the sole unit extends slightly around the forefoot area to protect your toes against rocks, tree stumps and other materials that you might strike your foot against. Also, the sole extension enhances the durability of these boots, since the toe area is one of the high-wear areas in a pair of boots.
Without a doubt, the Adidas Climawarm Pathmaker is one of the best hiking boots on the market today, especially for wet weather hiking. They are lightweight, comfortable, and durable. Apart from that, they provide enough traction to keep your feet steady during steep ascents and descents. And as you probably know, you can never go wrong with a pair of Adidas boots.
- Lightweight and durable
- Exceptional levels of comfort
- Great support and stability

12. Danner Men’s Crater Rim 6 GTX Hiking Boot
I am getting lots of opportunities to go hiking and I do it often with my pet dog. Some amazing hikes are available in Park City and countless others in the Wasatch Range and Southern Utah. Recently, I have tested a nice hiking boot, the Danner Men’s Crater Rim 6″ GTX Hiking Boot. These boots are hand-made in Portland and worn by the American Special Forces in Afghanistan. Danner Crater Rim boots are not for casual hikers. They are stiff, rugged, heavy, overbuilt, and expensive. Therefore, they are long-lasting, bullet-proof, and rugged hiking boots. A vast majority of people rate it as a heavy, stiff and hot boot. However, people like me spend huge amounts of time outdoors, in extreme weather, on challenging terrain will appreciate its ability to find traction, keep your feet dry and protect your ankles and feet from crushing, impacts and twisting. They come with nubuck leather uppers, breathable GORE-TEX lining, 100 percent waterproof, and Vibram Bifida outsoles.
The rubber rand is the most immediately apparent feature of Crater Rims. The Rubber bumper is used for protecting the shoes. During hiking, rand protects your shoes from scuffs and abrasion, which ensures that your boots look new for a long time. According to me, the rubber bumpers on these boots are extremely practical, however, it detracts from the natural beauty of the leather. These boots are highly suitable for wearing in the war zone or in the trails.
Danner Men’s Crater Rim boots are not specifically designed for winter. Replaceable Vibram Bifida sole is made by using big, Omni-directional tread blocks. This is helpful for getting boot grip in all directions. A fiberglass shank is also placed to prevent the sole from bending. The hefty rubber sole has immense power to absorb energy, so this boot is excellent for migrating impact energy before it reaches your foot.
Danner Men’s Crater Rim is completely waterproof. Besides, the Gore-Tex membrane extends to the ankle, so water will not seep in even when you step in deep puddles. In order to check the waterproof feature of this boot, I have stepped in ankle deep water, but my feet stayed dry. Even if the boots come without Gore-Tex membrane, they can shed water pretty well. In order to make the boot even more impregnable, I have applied some Nikwax to the Crater Rims. The next time I wear the boot, I feel like a superhero.
Actually, the fit of a boot depends on the shape of your foot. However, some users have the opinion that Danner Crater Rims fit on their feet perfectly, but others say that they are too wide or too narrow at the heel area. But, I can say from my experience that the Crater Rim does not provide me 100 percent fit (no boot ever will), but it is better than most other boots. I have a fairly normal shaped foot, normal width and fairly low arches. The boot provides me enough room for wearing a pair of wool socks.
The Crater Rims come with ankle support and ample arch support. You can also customize the fit very easily by lacing it up properly. I feel more and more comfortable the more I wear it. If you select the right size, you are going to have yourself a seriously comfortable boot. These Danners didn’t give me a single blister. I started with a test hike of 4.5 miles. But I also did a 20 mile backpacking trip in them.
My girlfriend presented me the Danner Men’s Crater Rim on my birthday. Since then, I have hiked with them in the desert, in the snow, down Tar Creek and up Mt Baldy. I have worn them in challenging hiking terrain with lots of sharp rocks, large boulders, and covered in loose screed. Maintaining ankle support and traction while descending steep and uneven terrains are some of the biggest challenges for any boot. However, the Crater Rim excels and never fails to provide good support and secure footing.
- Very durable.
- Lace up system ensures a good fit and easy to use.
- Completely waterproof.
- Great ankle support.
- Made in the USA.
- Traction, Vibram soles.
- Easy to put on and take off.
- Not so breathable on hot days.
Danner Men’s Crater Rim boots were manufactured to be tough, so, they are pretty heavy. If you really need durability, protection and support, Danner Men’s Crater Rim is ideal for you. You can trust me, these boots will not have any issues with durability even when you are hiking, backpacking or traveling with them. Danner Men’s Crater Rim are top notch boots and they are perfect for hikers, backpackers, and adventure travelers. If you want to get lots of support in an indestructible package, Danner Men’s Crater Rim boots are the best boots for you.

13. Asolo Men’s Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots
When it comes to hiking boots, there is no way I could pick one single design or brand as the best. The choice is purely preferential but there are just too many good options. However, within the mix you will land some designs that spark no interest at all. Hiking shoe manufactures know that enthusiasts are vey choosy and are guided by unique requirements depending on their taste and activities. Who told you all hiking is alike? People have different ways of making use of their shoes and others simply want to test their capabilities just so they can form an opinion (and write a review) about the design and model. I try out many new shoes and boots all the time. I like to get up close and personal with a good boot. Recently, the Asolo Men’s Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots caught my eye. So I decided to give you my take based on the research I have done about its features, benefits, cons and how you can maximize its use.
The first thing that strikes you about Asolo’s Fugitive GTX hike boots is the incredible design. It can be tempting to use them for other purposes as well but you would rather stick to hiking. Asolo is a popular brand that offers an assortment of hiking shoes. Some of the renowned pairs in their collection include Power Matic, TPS520 and FSN just to name a few. But this review is for the Asolo men’s Fugitive GTX hiking boots. Some of the obvious features you will notice in this pair hiking boot include the following.
This is of course common with many other hiking boots. Who wants anything other than leather when planning to tread some rugged terrain full of thorns, shrubs, mud, boulders and all the other stuff you will typically find lying around on rough terrains. This boot is made of pure imported leather of high quality, tensile strength and durability. Its textured finish makes it quite hard to scratch and tear.
You do not have to worry about absorbing all the dew and soaking your socks. The leather does not allow any water in, so you can afford to go out despite rainy forecasts. And even if you miss a step while leaping water pools, your feet will remain dry. You’ll probably look messy, but at least you’ll be dry.
This is a property that hikers know just how important it is to have in a hiking boot. A lug sole prevents toppling as it absorbs the thrust pressure allowing you to bounce up the hill while maintaining grip, rather than sliding backwards. The layered sole is also very tough and classy.
Classic/Urban Blended Design
When it comes to design, you would rather choose Asolo’s collections and it gets no better than the Fugitive GTX for men. It depicts a blend of classic and modern designs, featuring various elements of older boots as well as new enhancements to aesthetics and durability. The tough stitching, various segments of the shoe, long laces that run up to where the shoe reaches above your heel… it all comes together in a perfect boot.
There are other minor features such as padding for comfort (which is expected in any top notch quality hiking boot), a long padded “tongue” that keeps the lace from pressing on your feet. And then there’s that awesome logo on the front of the boot.
- Many customer reviews say the boot fits perfectly, as expected.
- Durable waterproof leather.
- Highly functional lug sole for the hike bounce.
- Exceptional performance and design.
- Ideal for tough terrains and all weather.
- If you frequently expose it to extreme temperature fluctuations, there is a risk of the layered sole peeling off.
If you want to make the most of your Asolo men’s Fugitive GTX hiking boots, keep them away from extreme heat and make sure to clean the dirt off as soon as you get them off your feet. If you do this, then you will need no other hiking boot for a long time.

14. New Balance Men’s MW1400 Trail Walking Boot
New Balance is a well reputed for providing top quality walking shoes with top quality features. Among several other shoes, one such product that immediately comes to mind is the New Balance Men’s MW1400 Trail Walking Boot. This one is just perfect for those who love hiking and outdoors. One of the greatest things about this boot that make it stand out from all the rest, is the fact that it feels more like a sneaker. It’s just that comfortable. This not only makes them suitable for hiking (their intended use), but also for people who are looking for a good working boot. You can stand up all day in these New Balances MW1400s and never be uncomfortable.
The sole of this boot is stiff but flexible, and the upper portion of this boot is very comfortable. The sole of this boot is very light and very comfortable as well. Another cool feature of this boot is the waterproofed upper, that guarantees that you’ll stay dry and, once again, comfortable. I’ve traversed some inclines in a rocky area and felt perfectly safe wearing this boot. I’ve trudged around dewy grasslands, but never did I feel any moisture seeping into the insides.
I have low arches and I felt these boots gave me good support. I do, however, always end up putting in my own custom insoles in any boot that I put on. They are a pleasure to put on. With some boots, you need to loosen the laces in order to fit in. But that wasn’t so much the case with these New Balance boots. They come in multiple colors: black, brown, grey. Not much of a choice, but then again… this is not the type of boot that tries to impress you with exotic design. This is a simple design, which comes in simple colors. There’s nothing wrong with that. Simplicity can be a good thing. Keep in mind that the black edition isn’t truly black. It’s got blue to it for sure.
These boots are very well suited for hiking trails from easy to mildly strenuous. The soles do not grip as good as those of the highest priced, top notch hiking boots. So it’s best not to use these on the most strenuous of hiking trails, where you are constantly hopping from one boulder to the next. For rough terrains, some of the other, higher priced boots on this page, would be a much better fit for you.
These New Balance Men’s MW1400 boot are great quality. They have a rubber sole, and a removable insole. They are unbelievably comfortable and can easily be worn day in, day out. They are also exceptionally lightweight. The lighter a hiking boot is, the more suitable it will be to also use it for trail running. It is also very well cushioned thanks to the compression moulded EVA midsole. Its water resistant membrane helps keep your feet dry. Its water resistant leather upper features a gusseted tongue. The abrasion resistant toe cover, prevents scuffs to your toe.
- The boot is true to size.
- It is very comfortable and also suitable for trail running.
- The design and the style of this MW1400 boot is also very good.
- You can wear it all day long.
- Very comfortable EVA sole.
- One user review complained of a slight toe ache in the breaking in period. I did not experience this myself.
This boot is great for hikers. But due to its insane, sneaker level comfort levels, they are also suitable as a work boot. These would be great for a security guard, a police officer, or people working in retail. This shoe has an EVA midsole and you can tell. It’s suitable for any type of weather like summer, rain, winter etc. It’s waterproof and has a gusseted tongue. It will protect your feet both dirt as well as cold.
All in all, New Balance’s MW1400 trail walking boot is an excellent piece of footwear, offered at a fair price. It’s a very feature complete boot, that is ideal for an extensive range of activities. Think of running, hiking, sprinting, jogging, etc. When you look at the price, it’s obvious that this boot offers really great bang for the buck. This quality for this price is kind of a no brainer.

They will allow you to hike longer and faster, without experiencing pain or discomfort on your feet. Slipping them on and off is easy and fast, thanks to a pull-on tab placed at the rear.
Apart from shock absorption and cushioning, the EVA midsole also provides arch support. Furthermore, the footbeds are removable. Therefore, if you have high arches or you have a foot condition that requires additional arch support, you can simply replace the boots’ footbeds with custom orthotics. The lacing system is equally effective when it comes to support. Once you adjust the laces, they will lock your foot down in position. Therefore, it eliminates unnecessary movements when you are hiking or trekking. These hiking boots for back pain also come with padded collars. The padded collars will support your ankles and ensure they are properly aligned at all times.
During your hiking adventures, there is a high chance that you will encounter different terrains and conditions. For instance, you might come across the snow, muddy trails, steep cliffs, rough terrain, or loose sand. Regardless of the conditions you encounter, you can rely on these hiking boots for rocky terrain, to give you a firm footing on the ground. They are equipped with durable rubber outsoles, featuring multi-directional lugs. With these boots, you can hike with confidence, without worrying about slipping or sliding.
No pair of hiking boots is immune to damage. However, the Nortiv 8 hiking boots are designed for longevity. Nortiv 8 has done an excellent job of crafting lightweight hiking boots, without compromising on durability. They are made of high-quality materials, to ensure they will protect your feet adequately and serve you for many years. The durable rubber outsole, combined with the sturdy upper materials, can comfortably withstand most of the conditions that you will encounter while hiking. The rubber rand at the toe and heel parts of these shoes, protect them against abrasion. You will also notice that the lacing system has been reinforced for extra durability.
The Nortiv 8 ankle-high waterproof hiking boots are designed for hiking in different conditions. As noted earlier, they are waterproof, lightweight and breathable. When you are hiking in wet conditions, their waterproofing capabilities will protect your feet against water, moisture and other forms of condensation. On the other hand, their lightweight and breathable construction means that you can use them in hot weather. These hiking boots for hot and cold weather will provide you with a comfortable hiking experience. They will keep your feet dry and breathable while making sure that you have superior protection against wet and cold conditions. Regardless of how challenging the hike will be, you can rest assured that these boots will take you wherever your hiking adventures lead you to.

They combine excellent stability, comfort, superior traction and durability. Also, they are surprisingly lightweight. Comfortable feet equal a great hiking trip, and these boots nail it.

When it comes to trekking, walking long distances or engaging in cross country running, or hiking, amongst the important things there is hardly any doubt that having the right boots is extremely important. Given the fact that the market is filled with quite a few brands, models, makes and sizes, choosing the right one could often be a big challenge. The shoe weight around 16.6 ounces and therefore is not very discomforting and taxing when I am on long hikes covering big distances. The height of the boots is around 8 inches. The fact that it has a lot of rave reviews and that it is being offered at a relatively low price (in my opinion), is one reason why I feel that this is one of the best hiking boots for the money online. For this price, you get a boot that is made of excellent, high quality materials. And quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind being seen in these either.
Why Customers Have Good Things To Say About It
I have regularly been using Under Armour’s UA Stellar Tactical Boots for quite a long time now. I have used them in the thickest of snow during winter. It was able to withstand a big layer of snow, so it looks to me like it is totally waterproof. The only moisture that ends up inside of your boot, is the one from sweating. This will mostly happen during summer and other sultry days, ofcourse. Another great thing about this shoe is that it is totally slip resistant making it safe even when navigating sharp and difficult surfaces. Apart from being extremely suitable for long distance trekking, hiking and climbing, they are also suitable for other activities, such as riding bicycles, taking a walk in. Especially if you’re going for a long walk, such as a hike.
The leather on the top is of the best quality and in spite of rough use, I have not seen these tearing or ripping off. They come in different sizes, so you can find a good Under Armour boot for every foot. For most people, the boot fits as expected. Furthermore, the Under Armour Men’s UA Stellar Tactical Boots are very light. After a while, it kind of feels like I am wearing tennis shoes. After researching the customer reviews on Amazon, I get the idea that the nice people from Under Armour have really great aftersales support as well. This can always come in handy for when you are one of the unlucky people that have something wrong with their pair. This only further adds to the bang for your buck that these babies give you.
Generally speaking, these are excellent boots. No boot is perfect, however. A few people had minor complaints about the lacing system. Despite loosening the laces, it can take a bit of effort to get your feet in. When it takes time to get yourself in a boot, it usually also means it costs some effort to get yourself out. Ofcourse, this is a minor nuisance. But look at how high this boot is. This boot really provides excellent support for your ankles and above because of how tall it is. Naturally, it’s gonna take some time to fit in. But then again, when you’re going on a hike… it’s usually for an extended period of time. The final verdict, is that these UA Stellar Tacticals are some of the best in their class. And great value for the money!

18. Zamberlan Men’s 996 Vioz GT Hiking Boot
Whether you are a nature lover, outdoor lover or you just love taking long walks in the wild, one thing is obvious. You definitely must have found the need to have shoes that are going to make your outdoor adventures a walk in the park. Shoes that are not only comfortable for hiking, but also good enough to withstand various weather elements such as rain and extreme heat when need be.
Being a hiking lover and enthusiast myself, I have had to go through a lot of shoes and boots. And I still am. I’ve seen a lot of shoes that did not stand the test of time when it comes to taking long hikes. Some of the boots I’ve owned have been very disappointing. You end up spending a small fortune on a pair of shoes that do not even last six months of active hiking. I could go on and on about how much certain hiking shoes disappointed me but that would only work to deny me the opportunity to tell you about the gem I’ve got in my posession right now. The pair of boots that I have been frequently wearing for the past six months: Zamberlan’s 996 Vioz GT hiking boot. Where have these been all my life?
A recent addition to my hiking boots collection, and most definitely one of my best pairs, are these Zamberlan’s 996 Vioz GTs. The first thing that you need to know about them is that they are Italian. I mean, is there anything Italian that isn’t just awesome? From Ferrari’s, their cuisine and even motorcycles. Italians are artists, they put art into the cars they manufacture, food they prepare and shoes they manufacture. These hiking boots are made by the Zamberlan Company, a family owned company that is currently in its third generation. Zamberlan is a small company, which has remained small to make sure that the craftsmanship that goes into making shoes remains top quality. The first thing that strikes you with the 996 Vioz GT Hiking Boots is the design. The 996 Vioz hiking boot’s design is nothing short of spectacular. The boot has a high top design that fully covers the ankle. The boot combines about three colors to give it an authentic outdoor look. The colors are red, grey and black, which have been placed at selected areas of the boot including the sole to give it a unique look.
The first outstanding feature about these hiking boots is their durability. Its durability is made possible courtesy of the finest hydrobloc full-grain leather. This leather is rugged and water resisting, making it the best choice for not only ensuring durability of the shoe, but also protects your feet from water. The outer leather is 2.6 mm thick, making it thicker than the average boot’s leather to make sure that the boot remains completely durable and water resistant. I cannot emphasize enough the number of times I stepped into puddles of water and mud, and yet my feet inside remained snug and warm inside.
The Zamberlan Men’s 996 Vioz GT Hiking Boot employs the use of GORE-TEX lining to ensure that maximum comfort is achieved. The lining provides the utmost protection and breathability, something I found quite refreshing given that these are shoes I have to wear for long periods of time. I didn’t want shoes that would leave my feet smelling funny after wearing them for long periods of time. What I even loved more about the boot was the microtex moisture-wicking nylon collar that does a wonderful job of keeping excess moisture at bay. Further comfort is achieved through the Z-Comfort Fit Footbed that works to provide a cushy layer for my underfoot. This makes my long hikes very comfortable.
Hills, rugged and rough terrains. These are the kind of places that I like to go hiking to the most. What I loved about these boots is that they were really comfortable while I was tackling slopes. Not only was I comfortable, but I could also maintain my balance very well. I later learned that the boot’s ankle features a flex system that allowed my ankle to bend forward without compromising on support. The comfort of tackling steep slopes is further reinforced by a vibram 3D sole which provides excellent grip and braking.
All in all, the Zamberlan Men’s 996 Vioz GT Hiking Boot provides the best of comfort and durability to make long hiking trips an enjoyable experience.

19. Lowa Men’s Tibet GTX Trekking Boot
Selecting the right footwear is a difficult task even for an experienced outdoor enthusiast. I have a long history with backpacking and trail running. But to this very day, I am still always careful when researching my next pair of boots. I go through boots fast because I hike a lot. Plus I like to own multiple pairs just for the heck of it. I am only interested in boots that offer me plenty of protection, so that I can also hit the more strenuous trails whenever I feel like it. One great pair that I’ve discovered, are the Lowa Men’s Tibet GTX Trekking Boots. There are pretty much perfect for my needs. These have been designed for carrying heavy loads, enduring extreme weather conditions, and long distance hikes on rugged terrain.
In this review, we’re going to have a look at the materials, design features and the construction of Lowa Tibet Boots. Recently, I went on hiking trips in a number of states, wearing my new Lowa Tibets. I have gone on long hikes and carried over 80 lbs loads. I have traveled in temperature ranges of cold to hot with these Lowas. I have worn them for week-long, extended trips and for more than 12 miles day hikes. I had these babies on my feet when I climbed several thousand feet of elevation. These boots have seen dusty and dry conditions, but also snow, sleet, and rain. Rest assured that I have tested Lowa Men’s Tibet GTX Trekking Boot thoroughly.
Materials and Construction
The outsole of Lowa Tibet Vibram Masai and the inside is a full-width, full-length 5mm nylon stabilizing shank for achieving rigidity and support in the toughest terrain. The leather used in these boots is incredibly durable, through a variety of terrains and conditions. It is also combined with waterproof GORE-TEX liner. Therefore, Lowa Tibet kept me dry all of the time, regardless of hiking through crossing creeks or enduring an hours-long downpour.
I’ve used other GORE-TEX boots in the past. Some GORE-TEX boots give me overheating and breathability issues. However, when wearing the Lowa Tibets, they were perfect in warmer temperatures. The manufacture of Lowa Tibet, claims that the boots come with a Climate Control System along with micro-perforations, which allow air in the boot and release moisture out. I’m not sure how they pulled off the great breathability on these. The fact of the matter is that these Lowa Tibet GTX trekking boots keep me cooler than many other waterproof, full leather boots that I have worn in the past.
The outsole and shank proved as huge assets during my hunting and hiking. Lowa Men’s Tibet provide its wearer a solid, stout, and sure-footed platform, the performance of which excels in off-trail terrains. You can find lots of boots and even shoes that perform well on a trail. But, when you cover miles and miles off-trail in the mountains with a heavy pack, lesser boots and shoes will stress your feet unnecessarily. The rigidity of Lowa Men’s Tibet GTX trekking boots, is an enormous asset when you climb up and down steep ridges and/or hills.
The boots are made of high quality materials. They are pieced togethed with solid construction. However, when purely looking at design, the smaller design details are equally important. You can find numerous design details in these Lowa Tibets, including the high-walled rubber rand. But also be sure to have a good look at the lacing and the tongue. I know it’s a matter of taste, but in my view, they are simply amazing. The tongue, made of thick but not-too-thick padding, provides protection and comfort without creating bulk. The shape of the tongue fits your foot perfectly. There is a unique stud on the front of the tongue, which integrates into the lacing system. When you wear this boot, this integration keeps the tongue secured and centered. Say goodbye to the days of your boot’s tongue swerving sideways.
Lacing is an over-looked element of boots. However, a good lacing system can make all the difference. Good lacing systems give you more control over how comfortably you fit inside your boot. You can shape it to moreso match the shape of your own, unique, personal feet. You can totally lock your foot into place to prevent blisters. It will provide you maximum comfort for long days of hiking.
Though the insole of Lowa Tibet is not so bad, it is not able to provide the level of support or comfort that you’ll want along with boots of this caliber. It’s not the worst stock insole I’ve ever had. But it can’t hold a candle to high quality insoles, which can be bought separately. My advice is, if you’re going to shell out for these super duper high quality boots, then also buy great insoles to go along with them.
The materials, design features and the construction of Lowa Men’s Tibet are A-okay. They give you support under heavy loads, they are waterproof, they give all-day comfort, and they are good for tackling rugged terrain. There is no denying the fact that these are darn good boots. For the price you pay, you are right to expect excellence. And that is precisely what they deliver!

20. Dr. Comfort Ranger Mens Hiking Boot
Have you ever been on a hike and the sole of your boots came off? It sounds funny but it happened to me once when I was new to this hiking thing. Well, I purchased a hiking boot in one of the local stores and set off. To cut the long story short, the shoes could not handle the rough terrain and within a few miles, one of the soles had come off. I just had to cancel my hiking trip and head back home. That is when I realized the importance of purchasing quality boots for my hiking.
Recently, I was introduced to Dr. Comfort Ranger Men’s Hiking Boot by a close friend who has been to some of the most difficult terrains in our country. Difficult terrains call for a sturdy and comfortable hiking boot, and that is what this shoe offers. It is rugged and handsome enough to handle all your indoor and outdoor activities. It comes with a style that is going to meet your desires.
The shoe is manufactured with top quality materials. They feature an upper made from top grain leather that provide the feet with added comfort and enhanced breathability. The mesh and lycra materials are also made from the finest materials. Construction and top quality materials ensure minimal wear and tear, which promotes longevity.
I particularly loved the protective toe box. This is meant to provide added protection from toe stubbing. They come with a firm heel counter that provides extra lateral and medial stability and support. A padded heel collar is meant to ensure there is no irritation as you walk around with the shoe.
The Dr. Comfort Ranger Men’s Hiking Boot remains one of the most comfortable boots I have ever purchased. I like how they fit since you do not need to tie the laces. The shoes are wide enough and can accommodate even people who have wide feet. I have worn shoes that have ended up hurting my feet at the end of the day, despite the fact that I am not diabetic. However, these shoes leave my feet just the way they were in the morning.
Plenty of people have wide feet, and finding the right boots for our wide footed fellow human beings, is one of the greatest challenges they’ll face in their lives. These boots, however, are a great fit for people with wide feet. But they aren’t just for people with wide feet. They are for all of those looking for durable and comfortable shoes. This is an underrated brand, right here folks.
If you are diabetic, then I would suggest these shoes for you. I do not have wide feet myself. But as indicated earlier, they are wide enough for those who do. You will be feeling like you are walking on clouds whenever you have them on. They come with special shoelaces that are very convenient. I wouldn’t think twice about buying these shoes again.
One thing I love about these great boots is that they are extremely comfortable. There is plenty of room to insert orthotic insoles. To make matters even better, the insoles are easy to put in and get out. The sole has really nice patter. Next to hiking, these would also be able to handle all your yard work. Unlike many other shoes, they do not carry debris to your house or your car. At the same time, this pattern offers a firm grip. You won’t slip & slide easily in these Dr. Comfort Ranger men’s boots.
One issue that has been singled out as a downside to these shoes, is the arch support. Some people feel it is not sufficient. However, this is not something you should worry about. There is enough room inside the shoe where you can add good support. Many different people have many different feet, and that is why a deliberate decision was made to provide enough room inside the shoe. This room is meant for people to add the support that works best with their feet. Dr. Comfort’s boots are a great fit for, say, custom insoles. The fit of the boots is additionally improved by the padded tongue.
If you are crazy about hiking and the outdoors like me, then this is one of the best boots for you. It is comfortable, sturdy, and wide enough to accommodate different type of feet. Its straps are adjustable and provide enough space inside, for when you want to fit in your insoles. The outsoles are lightweight and durable, long wearing and non-skid. And it all comes at a fairly decent price. I have no choice but to highly recommend these boots to all of you who value comfort above anything else.

Hiking Boots Buying Guide
Hiking boots are one of the most important gear choices that you can make. They literally determine the comfort and quality of your time, when you are out on the trail. Nothing can ruin a hike faster than not having the right pair of boots. The potential of foot injuries is huge. If your boot is not fitting well, your foot will slide around. The boot will not be very effective when it comes to a steady tread. You will also be risking blisters as well as other serious injuries like knee and ankle injuries.
It is therefore important to find a good pair of hiking boots, one that works for you, the type of hiking that you do, and your budget. When it comes to hiking boots, there is such a wide range that you might end up in a dilemma when trying to choose one. On the lower end, there are brands like Timberland, North Face, High-Tec, which are quite fashionable. On the higher end, you find brands like Scarpa, Vasque, and Salomon.
What Makes a Good Hiking Boot?
People have different opinions, on what makes a hiking boot great. Some will tell you it is the durability, others focus more on waterproofing and water resistance, while others tend to concentrate on the weight. Hiking boots are mainly built to provide protection to your feet. They achieve this function in different ways, including: Good hiking boots providing reliable protection on the sides. Most hiking boots are heavy because they contain extra padding, which protects your feet against branches, rocks and stones that you may step on during your hike, and gouge the side of the foot. Some fabric boots come with protective welts, usually half an inch or more from the sole, to offer extra protection.
- Good hiking boots should have a solid bottom. You should not feel stones or rocks through the soles. Therefore, if you can feel such materials, chances are very high that you will end up with aching feet, especially when after covering many miles on the trail. If you can press the bottom of the shoe with your thumb, such soles are not sturdy enough to provide adequate protection. Moreover, if you can twist its sole, it is probably too soft for a hiking boot. Trails are not like the pavements in your home or the smooth surfaces in your gym. Trails are rocky and rugged. Therefore, you need hiking boots that provide good support, to protect your feet from bruises.
- A good pair of hiking boots should offer great ankle support. To assess ankle support, just grab the top part of the boot, and try to twist it sideways. If it twists easily, it might not offer the protection level that trails demand. The top part of the shoe should be tough, to secure the ankle in position, and also provide great ankle support.
- Good hiking boots should be waterproof or they should be easy to treat with waterproofing solutions. If they are not fully waterproof, then they should have the ability to shed water easily and dry within a short period. Hiking with wet boots is very uncomfortable and may lead to blisters. You can also invest in a nice pair of Gore-Tex socks, to improve the waterproofing abilities of the boots, and keep your feet dry.
Types of Hiking Boots
When selecting hiking and backpacking boots, some of the main considerations are where you will be using the hiking boots, weather, climate, terrain, and the style of hiking boots that you are looking for. In terms of styles, there are different classes and categories of hiking boots. Hiking boots are available in four different categories: low-cut, ultralight hiking boots, general-all purpose hiker, heavier-backpacking boot and the heaviest among them is the mountaineering and winter hiking
Ultralight hiking boot
These are designed for the backpacker who wants to cut down on weight during their hike. Most of them are not waterproof. They are mostly lightweight and breathable. Boots in this category will keep your feet comfortable and dry throughout the day. Even if you go through water, they will breathe better, which means that both the shoes and the feet will dry faster. Most of them tend to have aggressive tread, which will keep you going even when you encounter rugged terrain.
Low cut boots are usually preferred by people with ankle injuries. High-cut boots tend to rub on scars and scar tissue, leaving you with lots of discomfort to deal with. Most people also tend to ignore the weight of the boots. There is that unspoken consensus among hikers that 1 pound on your feet, equals 5 pounds on your back.
When you are moving all day and lugging around those heavy boots, you will end up with more fatigue on your foot. That is why people prefer low-cut, ultralight hiking boots, if the trail conditions are not demanding. There is quite a huge difference when lugging around 3 pounds of shoes as compared to 12 ounces on your feet. ultralight hiking shoes enable you to cut a lot of weight, which means you hike longer and faster. You will also end up with more energy at the end of the day when wearing ultralight hiking boots.
All-purpose hiking boots
These are stiffer than the ultralight hiking boots. They provide more support when you go on different angles and terrains as well. Most of them contain a waterproof liner such as Gore-Tex or EVA. Therefore, you are sufficiently prepared for anything that the trail might throw at you. These are tough all-round boots, which can be used in different hiking conditions and surfaces. If you are going for a day or weekend hikes with tough terrain, these boots will do the trick for you.
If you are carrying a lot of weight, you are a heavyweight backpacker and you expect tough terrain, you require an all-round backpacking boot. These are all-leather, which means lots of waterproofing. They also come with Vibram soles, resulting to more traction and stability. These are much wider at the base than a traditional hiking shoe, which gives you guaranteed stability. They allow you to transfer the weight on your back and have greater ankle support, to take care of the weight on your back. If you are hiking on tough terrain, look for boots that have deeper lugs. The deeper the lug, the more traction on the shoes. Most brands angle the lugs differently to give you more breaking and gripping.
Hiking Conditions and Surfaces
Hiking boots can also be categorized according to the trail surfaces. When it comes to buying the right hiking boots, comfort prevails over looks and aesthetics. It doesn’t matter how gorgeous or cute your hiking boots are, if they are not comfortable, then you hike will obviously be miserable. Other issues to consider are durability, stability, water resistance and warmth. Fit is the most important thing, when you are buying hiking boots. You also need to select your hiking boots based on the terrain as well as the weight of your backpack. When selecting shoes based on the hiking surface and conditions, you need to decide whether you will be hiking on a normal trail, rough trail, off-trail or mountaineering.
Mountaineering boots are stiff in nature. Most come with a steel shank. Winter boots contain a snow gaiter for use on snowy conditions. Mountaineering boots also feature ample padding and insulation, to keep you comfortable under the extreme cold conditions encountered in such areas. These are also versatile, and ready to handle anything that you might encounter on the trail. They feature minimal seams, full-grain leather uppers, and excellent traction. Some also contain a bit of insulation.
Most mountaineering boots are high-cut, meaning that they rise above the ankles. With stiff nylon midsoles and full-length shanks, these are too rigid for full-stride or normal hiking. When wearing mountain boots, ensure they are properly broken into, before you hit the peaks with them. The leather can be quite aggressive on your skin, especially if they don’t fit perfectly or they are not broken into, leaving you with bruises, blisters and hot spots. When buying mountaineering boots, select the ones with minimal heel slippage, rocker soles, as well as rubber bands all along the welt, to enhance waterproofing and durability.
When you are hiking on a well-maintained trail, carrying a light pack, then you should hike with mid-cut or low-cut boots. They are mainly constructed of fabric and leather, or split leather, featuring multiple seams. Such a construction will allow water to seep through. If you anticipate wet conditions on the trail, then you should ensure they have a breathable and waterproof lining inside. You will also need to enhance their waterproof abilities, with Gore-Tex socks, or a waterproofing cream. Just like mountaineering shoes, these also come with stiff soles. They provide better support and traction, as compared to walking shoes. However, they are too unstable when carrying heavy backpacks and hiking on slippery terrains. Wear them with low-cut ankle gaiters, to prevent trail debris.
When you are hiking through a trail that looks almost non-existent, you will appreciate wearing full-grain leather boots, with rigid sole stability and above-ankle support. These types of boots are perfect for long backpacking trips, when you are hauling heavy loads on your back. They provide ample foot protection, yet they are still flexible for shorter strides, a common feature when you carrying a heavy pack while walking on heavy terrain. If you are hiking for high miles, then the shoes will eventually become soft. However, you should expect a length break-in time, due to their rigidity. Off-trail hiking boots also provide superior durability and waterproofing, thanks to their minimal seams and all-leather construction. Most of them are amazingly lightweight, which can be attributed to the newer sole and midsole constructions.
Rough Trail Hiking Boots
If you are more into aggressive day hiking and lightweight backpacking, rough-trail hiking boots are your preferred selection. Most are made of leather and fabric combinations. Some are porous and ventilated, designed for desert hiking conditions, while others come with waterproof and breathable membranes, which makes them perfect for hiking on both wet and dry conditions. Unlike mountaineering boots, these contain half-length shanks. This type of construction gives the sole enough rigidity, to support your feet when hiking on rocky conditions. They are also have a certain degree of flexibility around the balls of the feet. In short, they are a middle ground between rigidity and flexibility.
Just like their name suggests, these are running shoes designed for the pavements and similar surfaces. They are lightweight and low cut, with an aggressive tread pattern. Most are designed with breathable and lightweight mesh uppers. However, these shoes are not durable. They get worn out fast. Most have thin EVA midsoles, which mean that rocks and other pointed objects on the running surface can bruise your feet. Apart from trail running, they are also used by experienced backpackers, who hike with light loads and have strong ankles. They are preferred in such situations, due to their minimal weight.
Walking Shoes vs. Hiking Shoes
You also have the option of choosing a walking shoe, instead of a hiking boot. Most people prefer these because they tend to be less obtrusive on the ankle and they are more flexible. However, they don’t provide much arch support as you would find in a normal hiking boot. If you want to walk faster or even run on the trail, then you should go for a walking shoe rather than a boot. Walking shoes provide more protection to your feet than trainers do but less than boots. They promote the foot to be a lot more solid, your foot is straight and supported when it walks and there is a lot of even weight distribution through that foot as well. Walking boots are breathable, waterproof and they come with good treads. Walking shoes should not be used for walking long distances, since they don’t have that type of foot support.
Materials and Construction
When choosing the material for your hiking boots, then you need to consider your local area, as well as your preferred hiking conditions. Hiking boots are mainly made of leather, suede and fabric. If you will be hiking in conditions with wet grass, lots of puddles and wading through creeks, then a leather boot is the preferred option. If you will be hiking on a trail without those conditions, then a fabric boot is just fine. Leather is preferred due to its unbeatable waterproof qualities. Fabric boots are available in different materials such as cordura, suede and canvas fabric. One of the benefits of fabric boots is that they are much lighter as compared to leather and nubuck. The whole composition makes them easy to wear, they get to be more breathable and convenient when travelling. There is less weight to carry with you.
As previously noted, the material used on the upper of the shoe, affects its performance and durability. Performance relates to things such as waterproofing, breathability, and water resistance. Most hiking boots are made of a mixture of leather, mesh and synthetic. However, there are exceptions especially on some high-end shoes, featuring one-piece leather construction. Here are some of the commonly used materials, as well as their benefits and drawbacks.
Full-grain leather is commonly found on high-end, heavyweight and tough boots. It provides resistance against abrasion, as well as durability. Full-grain leather shoes also perform exemplary well, when exposed to wet hiking conditions. However, they are not as light as their counterparts made from synthetic leather and fabric. They are mainly used for backpacking, as well as extended thru-hike expeditions, which require the hiker to carry heavy loads. They are also very reliable on rugged terrain. Full-grain leather shoes require sufficient time to break in. Furthermore, they need regular maintenance, in order to keep the leather in pristine condition. The good news is that your cleaning and maintenance efforts will be reward with durability and longevity. Your lightweight hiking shoes will come and go, as your full-grain leather shoes withstand the test of time. With these, you will not be buying hiking shoes any time soon. Moreover, shoes from certain brands like Danner can be re-soled, thus extending its lifetime.
Nubuck and Suede Leather
Nubuck is simply buffed full-grain leather. This gives it a suede-like feel and appearance. It is water and abrasion-resistant and very durable. Due to their softer touch leather, these tend to be more flexible and ligher, as compared to full-grain leather shoes. However, their interior construction is quite thin, which reduces their durability. However, these are more durable than those made of synthetic fabric materials. They are also fairly flexible, which means that they require a short period to break in. They cost less and dry faster than full-grain leather boots. Most hiking boots on the market are made from a combination of nubuck leather and mesh. This way, they are able to remain lightweight and breathable. Nubuck leather also breathes better than full grain, and comes with a higher scruff resistance.
Synthetic Nylon and Mesh
There are a few brands which are currently producing shoes which are entirely made from synthetic and mesh. Hikers who want to reduce weight on their backpack prefer these. In addition, they are highly breathable and dry fast. Their main setback is durability. They break apart after two to three hikes. However, if you are more into a lightweight shoe and less on durability, these are the shoes to choose.
Other components found on the upper include the toebox, the heel cup or heel counter, a heel padded collar, and the tongue. The toe box protects your toes. Heavy boots tend to provide a higher degree of toe protection. On the other hand, the heel cup or counter supports and holds the heel in position. It secures the heel in position, prevents sideways movements and reduces lift when trekking. Heel counters also provide ankle stability. The padded collars cushion the Achilles tendon and the ankle. They also prevent mud, rocks and other debris, from entering the boot during your hike. The tongue provides cushioning on the front part of the foot. It also keeps dirt and water out of your boots. Most hiking boots come with gusseted collars and tongue.
When you are going for a hike, chances are very high that you will have a backpack, with a considerable amount of weight. This weight is usually transferred to your feet, leading to strain. This is where the midsoles come in. They provide cushioning while protecting the feet against shock and impact on the terrain. Midsoles determine the stiffness of your hiking boot. If you are hiking on a rocky or uneven terrain, then you should use stiff hiking boots. They offer stability and comfort. Midsoles also provided extra protection against sharp materials such as rocks and tree stumps. The main materials used to make midsoles are polyurethane (PU), EVA or a combination of both.
This material is usually preferred for tougher applications. It is firmer and more durable than EVA. However, it tends to be less cushiony, when compared to EVA. However, it handles heavy loads much better. In addition, it protects the feet against aggressive underfoot materials as well as impacts. They also maintain their shape longer, while adding to the overall longevity of the shoe. Polyurethane was mostly used on high-end boots such as Asolo, but its use is slowly spreading to mid-range hiking boots.
EVA is lighter, cushier, and cheaper. Most midweight and light hiking boots contain EVA midsoles. This cushy and soft material absorbs shock from your midfoot and heel, giving you a smooth and comfortable ride. However, EVA materials are not similar. Some are softer than others. If you are hiking for several days on tough terrain, then you should opt for a supportive and firm midsole, instead of excessive cushioning. In fact, those midsoles that are too soft and cushiony, break down pretty fast. Try to find a balance between cushioning density and firmness.
Outsoles serve 3 main purposes in a hiking boot; traction, foot support and enhancing the durability of the hiking boot. Hiking boots are preferred over cross-trainers, due to their superior traction and grip. You can comfortably hike over rocky, steep and slippery surfaces, without losing stability. Vibram is the main material used to make hiking boots. It has dominated the market for quite some time. Vibram produces rubber outsoles, based on the use of the shoe, as well as the brand. Another sole material is IsoGrip 5000. It provides lots of traction and anti-slip properties, especially on wet surfaces. These soles are also guaranteed to give you a minimum of 5000 miles Some rubber soles contain additives such as carbon, design to enhance the hardness of the shoe, especially for mountaineering and backpacking shoes. Hard outsoles also enhance durability of hiking boots.
Insoles play a crucial role when it comes to the fit of the shoe and arch support. If you have raised arches and the shoe has a flat insole, then it will cause you foot pain and other related problems. However, that should not worry you because you can replace them with third-party insoles, which are designed and modeled to conform to the shape and anatomy of your foot. Custom insoles however affect the volume of the shoe. Therefore, you need to determine whether the insoles of the hiking boot that you are purchasing are removable. If they are not removable and you still want to use custom orthotics, then you need to check on depth. Some hiking boots are designed with extra depth, which means that they can accommodate both the original insoles and the custom orthotics, without losing shape, volume and fit.
Another thing to look out for is the toe bumper. Toe bumpers help to repel water as well as protecting your toes. When there are toe bumpers, the fabric does not have to work as hard to repel water. This enables the boot to remain dry longer. Most leather boots also come with a toe bumper, which is good for scuff protection. If you are walking on rocky or craggy areas, or hiking uphill in areas with sharp rocks, the toe bumper will protect the front of the boot.
Size, Style and Fit
Fit is a very crucial consideration, when it comes to hiking boots. Feet are as unique as they come. It is very rare to find two feet that are alike. Feet come in different shapes. What might fit your friend or colleague, might leave you with massive foot problems. It is therefore crucial to try out the shoes for yourself. The general rule of thumb, is to know your foot, whether it is narrow, or wide, whether your have anomalies in your foot shape and such things that can be addressed immediately. If you know your foot shape, then you will save yourself a lot of time going through numerous pairs just trying to find your fit.
When it comes to fit, you should ensure that the middle of the foot is snug and tight. You only want room in the toe box. That is the only place the shoe should be loose. The toebox should be roomy, so that your toes have room to wiggle. They should not be scrunched up front. If you are lucky enough to buy your boots from a physical store, then you should try them out later in the day. Why is this important? As your foot expands during the day, it will be a little bit bigger than it was at the beginning of the day. Therefore, go shopping for boots at around 5 to 6 pm when your foot has expanded to its biggest size.
You should also wear the socks that you plan to wear during the hike. Some people just throw in a pair of athletic socks or running socks, put on a pair of boots and two days later during the hike, they realize that the boots don’t fit as they did initially. Therefore, when looking for a fit is relatively snug from the ball of your foot going back is relatively snug but there is sufficient room for your toes.
This way, you are not risking scrunching up your toes or getting blisters on your feet. On the other hand, if your boot is loose all around, you will get plenty of debris moving in and your foot will be sliding around, which can be quite messy during the hike. Ensure that the shoes you intend to wear during the hike don’t pinch anywhere. Wear the boots in the house for a while.
You also need to consider arch support. A boot with great arch support will give you loads of comfort throughout. You can spend a whole day in those boots and you will not suffer from any aches or pains. However, if you find a good fitting shoe without good arch support, don’t panic. The good news is that there are custom orthotic inserts, which you can buy. Just remove the insoles on your shoes, insert the insoles and enjoy the support provided by the orthotic inserts. There are numerous types of custom inserts currently available, for different foot shapes and foot conditions. Eventually, you will end up with a great pair of hiking boots, which are both comfortable and supportive.
Brands specialize in different ways, when it comes to the width of shoes. Some produce narrow boots while others specialize on wider boots. For a wider foot, you should try Merrell. This brand produces boots with lots of foot volume. Therefore, people with wider feet find Merrell hiking boots really comfortable. On the narrow end, Vasque carries the day. Vasque boots are aggressively narrow. They don’t have a lot of foot volume. People with narrow feet will realize that these fit almost like a glove. Salomon also lies on the narrow side. They are lightweight and narrow and low-volume boots. Keen is another wider-feet boot brand. They make shoes with bigger volume and more padding for hikers with wide feet.
When you are buying your shoes in a store, make sure to bring in all the materials that you intend to put in your boots during the hike. The first thing to do is to put both of them on. Leave the laces untied and try to wiggle your toes. Ensure that you can spread your toes evenly, throughout the shoes.
Apart from that, when you are standing in the shoes, toes pushed to the front, you should be able to insert your index finger at the back. Your index finger has the right size to determine whether your shoe has that important extra space at the front. This extra space provides extra comfort and protection when hiking downhill, since your foot tends to slide forwards in the hiking boot.
You can also perform the sensory test, to determine whether you have the perfect fit. Just remove your socks and wear the shoe without socks. Use all your sensory powers, to determine whether there is any discomfort on any part of the shoe. This test is very important especially for the small toes. Some shoes tend to have a narrow toe box, which leaves your toes jammed or pinched. You might not notice this problem immediately, especially when you have two pairs of socks. With the bare foot test, all this will be revealed. Does the boot feel too narrow at the ball of the feet? Is the middle part too tight? This test helps to rule out boots that were not designed for your feet. After that test, proceed to perform the same test with socks on. Ensure that you stretch the socks smoothly over the foot, without any folds. The boot should not feel too tight in any area. Conversely, it should not be too lose on any part. It should have a snug fit. You can easily adjust the sizing of a loose shoe using a thick pair of socks. However, if you buy a tight one, you don’t have any options but to suffer the consequences of aching feet.
If you are a woman, then you should pay more attention to the width of the foot. Most women are used to tight-fitting office and casual wear. However, if you buy a tight-fitting hiking boot, you can have foot problems later. Most shoes designed for women, tend to be narrow, taking consideration of women’s foot anatomy.
However, there are a few exceptions, where the hiker has wide feet. For women in that category, get your sizing right. If your feet run extra-wide and you can’t seem to find hiking boots in the women’s category, then you can try the men’s boots, as a last resort. For example, a woman’s size D corresponds to men’s size C. Pay more attention to the heel area if you decide to go with men’s boots, since ladies have narrower heels.
Another test that you can perform, is gently rolling the balls of your feet. You can also crouch down and bend forward and then check whether your heels are lifting up at the back of the boot. The heel should not lift at the back. If it does, there will be friction, which ultimately leads to blisters.
Most shops that sell hiking boots, understand that finding a shoe that fits perfectly, is always a challenge. Majority are willing to let you go with the shoes at home, so that you can try them out and assess their fit. If they don’t provide the expected fit, then you can return them either for a full refund or for an exchange. You need to note that shops will only accept them back, if they still look “new.” If you venture outdoors with them and they collect dirt and mud, they might not be accepted back. Confirm with your merchant first whether they have a “wear at home” policy, before buying them. If the merchant does not have that policy, then you need to look elsewhere.
Other Factors to Consider
Lacing systems play a vital role, when it comes to the comfort and fit of hiking boots. However, most hikers tend to ignore this feature. If your shoe is prone to loosening or the lacing system is poorly designed, then you will waste a lot of time on the trail stopping frequently to tighten them. Furthermore, you might even end up with blisters, and hot spots, which is not a pleasant experience during a hike. Laces are easy to fix, due to the numerous replacement varieties currently available.
Most shoes from Adidas and Salomon come with the single-pull speed lacing systems. Although they are quite convenient especially when you are in a hurry, customizing a fit is not easy. You also need to check the quality of the laces. Ensure that they can withstand changing weather conditions and hiking surfaces. You don’t want to end up with split races during your hike, in the middle of nowhere. Modern hiking boots currently have advanced lacing systems, such as locking hooks fitted close to the ankle bend. These hooks secure the laces in position throughout the trek, increasing overall comfort on the trail.
The kind of hiking that you do
Are you going for a short day hike in the park, or are you going for a thru-hike in, which will involve climbing high mountains with a 50-pound park on your back. Those type of things will definitely determine the type of boots that you can buy. If you are going for a short day hike, lasting you from one hour to a few hours, then you can easily do that in a pair of sneakers. On the other hand, if you are climbing a high peak with a heavy pack on your back for several days, then you require something more substantial to support your ankles, your Achilles and your feet in general.
Most hikers, especially beginners go to the market looking for the cheapest hiking boots that they can get. You should stay away from such notions. If there is something you should not skimp on, then don’t skimp on boots. The actual damage that can be caused by a bad pair of hiking boots is astronomical, when you consider the medical conditions and the lost time. Adding $10 or $20 will get you something that is more reliable and can last you several years.
Cleaning and Maintenance of Hiking Boots
Good hiking boots provide protection, support and comfort on the trail, especially when carrying heavy loads. A good quality hiking boot also costs more money. Therefore, it is important to take care of them properly, if you want to maintain them in good condition, and serve for a longer period. Hiking boots are generally designed to handle grit, rock, mud and any other form of debris, which might be present on the trail. However, that does not mean that you just toss them wherever you wish after the hike, and then forget about them. With good maintenance of hiking boots, you can enjoy a great hiking companionship on the trail for many years. Failure to take care of your boots leads to failure within a shorter period than you expected.
Most shoes are ready to wear when they are purchased. Most come with a water treatment on the outside surface, for repelling water and preventing the upper materials from absorbing moisture. The first question is, how often should you be maintaining your footwear? This is not something you need to do every day. A lot of it actually depends on how active you are with your footwear, and the conditions you are using it in.
Cleaning Hiking Boots
When you arrive home from a hiking or backpacking trip, check the boots to ensure there is no sand or any form of dirt trapped in the seams or other cavities. Before any cleaning is done, you need to first remove the laces and the insoles. This will allow them to air properly and dry faster, after the hike. Insoles absorb some moisture. Once they are outside the boot, the moisture will dissipate allowing the boots to dry quickly. This only applies in multi-day trips. Hiking boot experts recommend that leather boots should be air-dried for 24 hours, before wearing them again. After removing the insoles and the laces, it is now time to remove dirt from the shoes. If they are heavily soiled, then you will require a specialist cleaning product, which will remove even the toughest dirt and stubborn stains. For normal dirt, just clean them in lukewarm water. If you use cleaning products, ensure that you impregnate the boots thoroughly after the cleaning. Most cleaning products open up the leather pores. Brush your boots thoroughly to revive the leather properties and to allow them to breathe again. As lukewarm water and soap are absorbed into the leather, they come out with dirt. However, this also exposes the leather, and it needs some protection.
Conditioning the Boots
As noted earlier, the cleaned boots now have open pores, meaning they cannot provide sufficient waterproofing and water resistance. To restore that capability, you need to close the leather pores again. Use an impregnating spray first, when the boots are still moist. Impregnating them prevents water absorption. However, the leather retains its breathability. Waxed and smooth leathers are easier to maintain than suede and nubuck. They are also more resistant to dirt and water. After waterproofing your boots, treat them with Active Crème. As you wash the shoes and remove dirt, you also remove some of the leather properties. Failure to replace these properties using care-cream makes the leather to dry out, and eventually starts cracking. Real leather can only maintain its shape and flexibility, with the right products and proper maintenance.
Maintaining nubuck and suede Hiking Boots
The surface of suede and nubuck leather, becomes shinier and smoother after applying wax cream. Use a wire suede brush to lift the pile again. However, it will not have the exact look as it was when it was new. Gently brushing with a wire brush freshens up suede and nubuck, which had been clogged after applying wax. Smoother leather might not require this procedure. After absorption of wax into the leather, the hiking boots should be treated with water-proofing product again. The waterproofing product usually becomes fully effective after 24 hours or so. You also need to treat the boots the previous day before you set off for your hike. Impregnating the leather maintains its waterproofing and breathability characteristics.
Storing your hiking boots
The best place to store leather hiking boots is in a shoe box or bag, in a well-aired and dry place. Store them with a wooden boot tree, to maintain their shape. Avoid storing your hiking boots inside your car or in moist conditions. They will eventually get mould, which will destroy both the leather and the fabric.
Buying Boots Online
Most people tend to shy away from buying boots online, since they want a physical store where they can try on the shoe. However, they fail to notice that buying boots online comes with its share of advantages. For example, there is a wider selection of shoes online, than you would normally find in a physical retail store or outlet. Online shops also provide sizing tips and information, which will ensure that you get the right fit. There are also extensive customer reviews on online shops, discussing issues related to fit. Such information tells you whether the shoe runs wide or narrow. This way, you are able to get a perfect fit, even without trying the shoe first. Online shoes also tend to be much cheaper, than the price on most retail stores. Furthermore, if it so happens that the boot that you bought online does not fit as you would like, most sellers on Amazon allow you to return the shoe, for an exchange or even a refund of the money. Therefore, don’t shy away from buying hiking boots online. Take advantage of the wider selection and the huge discounts.
