Plus, diabetes can lead to an endless list of complications: from eye complexities, gum disease, heart problems, skin problems, and most, even foot problems.

Ayup, foot problems!

Diabetes makes it difficult for patients to lead normal lives. Just the intake of maintenance medicines can be difficult enough. The constant worry of missing your medicine intake schedule is stressful in itself, but add to that the physical and emotional toll of worrying about developing complications.

You need good shoes. So I suggest you have a look at these!

The soles are non-slip so they provide adequate traction, although the material of the sole can make your feet a bit hot after a while. If that happens, you can just take the slippers off, give your feet a break and a chance to cool down.

Perfect for: Women with diabetes, arthritis, and other foot problems who prefer thong slippers to use at home.

Plus, some women who normally would wear orthotics with any shoes didn’t have to use orthotics with these slippers. That’s just how amazingly comfortable these slippers are. Of course, you can still wear your orthotics if you want. These slippers are flexible enough. These shoes come in many sizes, and you can order true to your size. If you have narrow feet, these will fit just fine. They may be too narrow for wide feet, though.

Wide Toe Box and Added Comfort

These slippers also come with extra wide toe box, so you can have enough room to move your toes around. They tend to run on the large size, so we advise that you purchase one-half to one size smaller. They also have great traction, so even seniors will be safe in using them. They’re also very easy to slip on, making them a great pair of house slippers for wheelchair-bound men. If you want highly stylish shoes that you can proudly wear at work and important meetings, these diabetic shoes for men are a good choice. They look like your normal fashionable full-grain leather work shoes except they come with premium features for maximum comfort. Unlike standard shoes, Propet’s Village Walker’s Oxford comes with fully padded linings that don’t hurt your skin around your ankles. There is also enough toe room and extra depth for your orthotics.

Super Soft and Comfy

These shoes are so soft inside that you can be comfortable with just your cashmere socks which are a bit thinner and warmer than acrylic or nylon ones. Also, if you tend to react to chemicals used in non-leather shoes, it will be comforting for you to know that customers who experience the same found leathers to be non-irritating. So you don’t run the risk of burning and hurting your toes in any way. There is also an extra-wide toe box, making it ideal for diabetics with neuropathy or men with other foot problems that necessitate larger toe rooms.

8. Propet Men’s MPED3 Pedwalker 3 Oxford

This is another great option if you want a casual-looking comfortable pair of Medicare-certified diabetic shoes that you can use during a casual stroll to the park or the mall. Propet’s Pedwalker 3 Oxford provide double insoles which provide twice the normal cushioning given by diabetic shoes, so this makes sure that the pressure on your feet will be minimized, making long walks possible again. These shoes combine neoprene and full-grain leather on the upper portions for maximum durability. The rubber outsole also provides traction so you can safely walk on smooth surfaces.

Easy to Slip On

What people love most about these shoes is the “tongue” part. Many people with swollen feet due to diabetes and other conditions find wearing most slippers difficult because their swollen feet would hit the top of the slipper or what is called the “tongue.” However, with the Pedwalker 3 Oxford, the tongue is actually a part of the shoe and folds back so that your foot can easily slide in without hurting your swollen feet. The Velcro straps can be loosened or tightened depending on the condition of your feet. These features plus the wide toe box make these shoes great for diabetes-related neuropathy.

Breathable and Stretchy

Although these shoes look dressy at first glance, the nylon sort of ruins this dressy feel, so these shoes are best for non-working conditions. The materials of these shoes are very soft, breathable, and stretchy, so if you buy these shoes, you can have extremely comfortable casual or home shoes.

Perfect for: Diabetic men with swollen feet and neuropathy.

In fact, some customers report that the shoes tend to be one size smaller than the standard size, so it’s best to order one size bigger than your true size and an appropriate wide size. These are not machine washable; it’s best to hand wash these slippers using a gentle brush and water. Air dry only.

Foot Issues Caused by Diabetes

Diabetes causes a host of foot complications including neuropathy, calluses, ulcers, skin changes, and poor circulation. These complications are extremely painful at times, so preventing, recognizing, and treating them is crucial to keep them from advancing to more severe cases.

Neuropathy

You think legos are painful? Try neuropathy.

Neuropathy lessens your ability to feel any sensations in your feet including heat, pain, and cold. Diabetes leads to poor blood circulation which can then damage the nerves in your feet. The resulting condition is called neuropathy.

When your foot's nerves fail to function properly, this results in numb toes, so you won’t immediately notice if you cut or injure your foot. We all know the dangers of having untreated wounds and cuts for diabetic people. Untreated wounds can quickly escalate to severe infections. Neuropathy can also cause swelling and change the shape of your feet and toes, which is often uncomfortable and inconvenient when it comes to looking for shoes that can perfectly fit on you.

Calluses

Calluses can develop in high-pressure areas in the feet of even non-diabetic people, but they develop faster among diabetes patients. These calluses form due to frequent friction, most commonly at the edges of our smallest and biggest toes and even at the ball of our feet. Untreated calluses can get very thick and turn into ulcers or open sores.

Foot Ulcers

Foot ulcers often form on the bottom of the big toe or on the ball of the foot. Some poorly fitting shoes can also cause the development of ulcers on the sides of the feet.

Are ulcers serious? Yes, they should be treated seriously as with anything that forms on your feet. Your healthcare provider should immediately see and treat foot ulcers to avoid serious infections and even amputation. Foot ulcers are often treated with antibiotics and a more proper fitting pair of shoes that will not cause foot ulcerations.

Skin Changes

Diabetes can often change the skin condition of your foot. If you had well-moisturized feet before having diabetes, you may find that your feet are now often dry and often peel and crack. This is caused by the non-functioning feet nerves that are supposed to control the oil and moisture of your feet. Extremely dry skin is more prone to chapping, cracking, and blistering.

Poor Circulation

A beetroot's blood vessel. (Yes, I know my readers aren't beetroots.)

Diabetes can also cause blood vessels in our feet to harden and narrow, making it hard for blood to efficiently flow. Poor blood flow in our feet can make them less capable of fighting infection and healing quickly in case of wounds or cuts. To combat this, exercise regularly. This will stimulate blood flow in legs and feet. You should also use comfortable shoes with soft materials at all times to keep you from tiring out easily and developing blisters and sores.

With diabetes, the importance of keeping your feet and even your whole body safe from any blisters, rashes, wounds, and cuts increases. Often, regular shoes can make things worse. Regular shoes can be too tight, too loose, or made of abrasive materials that will hurt your skin after an extended period of use. Diabetes patients should stay away from these shoes.

This is where diabetic shoes come in.

Diabetic Shoes: What are They?

Diabetic shoes are footwear especially made with diabetes patients’ special needs in mind. These shoes have different specifications and features that make them safer to use for diabetic patients. Unlike regular shoes, diabetic shoes use soft materials and have padded, cushioned interiors and linings to avoid abrasion on patients’ skin. These shoes also have a higher and wider toe box which keeps your toes from rubbing against each other and developing blisters and hot spots in the process.

Diabetic shoes also have good air circulation that is made possible by fabric or sandal-style uppers. Sufficient air circulation is needed to avoid over-sweating which may cause sores and irritation. It also allows the skin to properly breathe.

To make room for orthotics or inserts that cushion the heel, support arches, or correct uneven stride, diabetic shoes are also usually deeper than regular ones. These inserts can work wonders in correcting your posture and making walking more comfortable. The inserts will also lessen pressure on your feet, protecting it from developing calluses and foot ulcers in the process.

Diabetic shoes can give the proper care your feet need to keep them healthy and safe from infections. These shoes are made especially for those who have diabetes, so many doctors actually encourage using diabetic shoes.

Different Types of Diabetic Shoes

Depending on your needs, your doctor may suggest the following types of shoes for diabetes

1. Healing Shoes

Healing shoes are used when you are recovering from a foot surgery or foot sores and can either be open or closed-toe sandals. Closed-toe healing shoes for diabetes are generally more preferred because they provide better protection for your feet.

2. In-depth Shoes

In-depth shoes are diabetic shoes that are 1/4 to 1/2 deeper than the regular shoes. This additional space makes room for inserts. It will also accommodate foot changes like hammertoes or calluses.

3. Custom-made Shoes

To ensure that you’ll have a perfect-fitting diabetic shoe, you can have a custom-made pair of diabetic shoes that will be created from the mold or pattern of your foot. This is particularly useful if your foot has a form of deformity. As with most custom-made products, these shoes would be pricier than commercially available shoes.

Diabetic shoes are assessed by Medicare using certain guidelines that help determine the quality of the shoes. So diabetic shoes that are Medicare-certified are guaranteed high-quality and effective in giving relief to diabetic patients. However, there are also other therapeutic shoes that are not labeled as diabetic shoes but still work wonders for these patients nevertheless. Since these shoes provide as much comfort as diabetic shoes, many diabetic patients also consider them when shopping for the best pair of shoes for diabetes.

Foot Complications that a Diabetic Shoe Will Address

Diabetic shoes can prevent blisters and cuts due to neuropathy. It can also prevent calluses or the escalation of calluses to foot ulcers. It will also provide better air circulation for your skin to properly breathe in, offsetting or helping you manage adverse impacts of skin dryness caused by diabetes.

Comfortable shoes that will not trouble you in any way and will give your feet enough space to breathe are keys to keeping your feet healthy despite your diabetes. Regular shoes often have rough materials and are lacking in overall arc support, causing you more body pains in the process.

Aside from these diabetes-related foot conditions, diabetic shoes are also used by people with arthritis, hammertoes, bunions, swollen feet – basically, conditions that require extra toe room and extra width. So if you have these conditions as well, you will hit several birds at once if you get yourself a good pair of diabetic shoes.

Top 5 Things to Look for in Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic shoes are a major investment that you will make for your health and well-being. Just like how you’ve carefully chosen your diabetes healthcare provider, it’s also important to carefully choose the shoes that you will trust your feet with.

Here Are the Top 5 Things You Need to Look for When Choosing Which Diabetic Shoes to Buy

1. Comfort

The number one concern is your comfort. The diabetic shoes should be able to address your primary needs as a diabetic patient which include but are not limited to numb toes and skin sensitivity. To make sure that the shoes you’re getting pass the standard for diabetic shoes, ask your doctor for a list of recommended qualities of diabetic shoes and use that to assess the various choices available on the market. You can also ask some patients (either offline or online) about their experiences with various diabetic shoes.

2. Durability

You are making an investment, so you want the shoes that will last a long time. Look for customer reviews about how long the particular shoes you’re eyeing have lasted for them. Ideally, the shoes should last a minimum of 2 years. Although the durability of a product also depends on how well you care for it, it also highly depends on the process and materials used to manufacture the products. Choose diabetic shoes from providers who are known to have an outstanding commitment to quality.

3. Materials

The materials used in diabetic shoes are often different from regular shoes primarily because those used in regular shoes often cause chafing or skin blistering. New shoes, in particular, cause sores in the heels because of the tightness and rigidity of the brand new materials. Diabetic shoes should not give you these problems. From the moment you first wear them to the moment you take them off, your feet should not feel pain in any way. If they do, stop using the shoes immediately. There should be sufficient pads and foams around the edges to keep your skin safe from rubbing.

4. Accommodates Orthotics

Your diabetic shoes should be able to accommodate your orthotics. This is ideal because you may have gotten used to using your orthotics, and using the ones that come in some diabetic shoes may make you feel uncomfortable. This is especially important if you have a custom-made orthotic that you need to wear at all times.

5. Toe Room

You also need to make sure that the diabetic shoes have sufficient toe room where you can spread out your toes more freely than in a regular, crowded shoe. This is important to keep your toes from rubbing and developing sores.

Tips for Getting the Best Diabetic Shoes for You

1. Don't Sacrifice Quality over Affordability

A common mistake that diabetic patients or the families of diabetic patients do is to buy cheaper diabetic shoes only to find that these do not hold up to their promises. 3. Research, and Then Research Some More

    1. Hi Shakila,

Sorry to hear about your numbness. You came to the right place, though. All shoes on this page are good ones, because I don’t want to bother my readers with sub par shoes.

If you don’t have any specific needs, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense for me to recommend you anything in particular. Let me know if you need more help.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  1. Hi Brian,

Interesting post! Do you have any shoe and/or sock recommendations for Nursing Assistants with diabetes? Take into consideration the long hours of standing and circulation.

    1. Hi Smiley Face,

I’m no expert on socks. If you’re looking for a good nursing clog, then check out this page. Also, if you want to increase your standing comfort in a shoe that will take an after market insole, then go with Tread Labs!

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  2. Click on men’s shoes and website takes you to women’s. Click on women’s and website takes you to women’s as well. Are there no men’s shoes ???

    1. Hi Dick,

There’s a men’s and a women’s section on this page. I clicked a few and they definitely lead to men’s and women’s shoes on Amazon.

      Try again, maybe?

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  3. Yes, I have an ulcer that formed on the left side of my left foot right on the bone, that is in the process of healing – they say 4 weeks or longer. I was wearing Dr Comfort ladies shoes and Crazy train tennis shoes – both which apparently rubbed that bone causing the ulcer. Any suggestions for a pair of nice shoes that wouldn’t touch that spot.? Do I need to purchase extra wide shoes? Thanks, Coleen

    1. Hi Colleen,

Diabetic shoes aren’t supposed to rub against any spot, because they’re non binding and therefore designed to not rub.

If you’ve experienced rubbing, anyway… then maybe it’s a good idea to visit a physical store that carries diabetic shoes and try them on.

Only way to know for sure that you’ll get a pair of shoes that’s suitable for your particular situation.

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  4. I’m a former backpacker. I’ve been sidelined for over a decade due to health issues. I’m a diabetic and have hammer toe and neuropathy. I need a backpacking boot that can incorporate a custom insole designed by my orthotic team. They are clueless about what to suggest. The Dr. Comfort ‘hikers’ don’t hold up over time. The Mt. Emey’s i’m using are fine for what I’m capable of right now but each week I’m getting stonger and going farther. The trail is calling me. I need a boot that can be used with a 25-35 pound pack and good for two overnights on the trail. Thats my goal by this winter.

I’ve checked Asolo, Vasque, Merrill, and Soloman and am at a loss. Does no company make backpacking shoes for diabetics???

    1. Hi Michael,

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. Sounds like quite a pickle.

The Dr. Comforts are the only ones I know about that are both for hiking as well as diabetics. But if you don’t like’em much, then that narrows down your options.

I’ve got a number of hiking boots reviewed by narrow and wide. Maybe you can find something you like in there?

      Best of luck!

      Sincerely,

      Brian

  5. My foot and fingers and nails is burning and pricking like a pin and cutting like a knife and no blood circulation I am not sleeping at night also these all things everyday 24 hours I am bearing from five years please give me your advice

  6. I ‘m looking for a pair of shoes for my diabetic sister. I’m looking for cushy comfort inside the entire shoe. This is a comment I got from her: “It’s mostly the inner part of the left foot. below the ankle bone. The stiff leather diabetic shoe hurt like mad, the whole 20 minutes or so I wore it.” She loves to walk, but needs something comfortable. The diabetic shoes don’t work! And a pair I sent her don’t have the cushion where she needs it. Can you suggest a good quality shoe that is soft and comfortable inside?

    1. Hi Maryclara,

If stiff leather shoes don’t work, I’d be inclined to look at slippers and/or sneakers, which you’ll find right here on this page.

Best of luck to your diabetic sister. I hope she finds what she needs.

      Sincerely,

      Brian
